Question from Unoriginally Named Editor (20:52, 1 June 2021)

I've been reading essays, and I'm curious about them - how are they created? --'Ridge(Conversation|Fascination|Imagination) 20:52, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Unoriginally Named Editor: Hello and welcome! Essays are created by simply creating a new page (in the Wikipedia or User namespace) with whatever (within reason) that you want to say. There's not much more to say — you could consider looking at the guide on writing essays for specific details. Tol | talk | contribs 21:44, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, thanks for the clarification. 'Ridge(Conversation|Fascination|Imagination) 22:04, 1 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question from Hamza Al Rehman (17:24, 3 June 2021)

edit

hi, mentor, I need help to approve my company article. --Hamza (talk) 17:24, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Hamza Al Rehman: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! If it's an article for your company, it's not a good idea to write about it. Wikipedia has a conflict of interest guideline, which states that "you should disclose your COI when involved with affected articles". One way to do this would be to copy and paste the following wikitext into your user page: {{UserboxCOI|1=Draft:Ehmiat}}. You are also advised to not edit the articles in question directly. Some Articles for Creation reviewers noted that the company does not appear to be notable. Wikipedia has a general notability guideline, which states that "A topic is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". I strongly suggest that you focus your editing in other areas — the article Tanveer Ashraf Bhatti which you created is great! Tol | talk | contribs 18:25, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Please Review this Article List of 2021–22 NBA season transactions Hamza (talk) 19:39, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Hamza Al Rehman: I'll take a look at it now. Note that the template {{Review}} is not to request review of the article — it's for tagging problematic pages; I've removed the template. Tol | talk | contribs 20:32, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Hamza Al Rehman: Yes, I believe that the article is fine. I'm doing some cleanup now. Tol | talk | contribs 20:35, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

An Observation about Brand Extension and the way Wikipedia handled it

edit

I am the innovator of brand extension and coined the term in 1979. I conducted studies for many Fortune 500 companies for 10 years and brand extensions I developed still today generate over a billion dollars a year in sales. Academic writings did not begin until 1990 when my friend David Aaker begin some work on it. You can see that I am telling the truth because all the quotes you now have from me predate 1990. No one conducted practical studies or academic studies until 10 years after I wrote about it.

This current Wikipedia review of brand extension is both faulty and does not explain the concept. I understand the notion of differing viewpoints and I did not alter the great variety of academic research done after 1990 that you quote. I disagree with a lot of it, but it is still present and unaltered in the Wikipedia posting. No one has more experience than I do on the subject and the changes I suggested are simply the truth about how brand extension came about and the latest practical research on the subject. If you want it to remain just a mish-mash of academic thoughts with no clear information about how it came about and what it does for a company, then leaving it as it is accomplishes that. But I am hoping that future readers who are practitioners will want to better understand the history and the concept.

Today there are thousands of successful brand extension new products around the world. The risks of dilution I pointed out in my first paper. These never happened in practice because brand extensions too far removed from the parent brand were at best marginal successes or failed. But academic writers took off on these supposed risks. Without evidence, they wrote articles about the hypothetical risks. I have debunked that theory. In fact, the change in perceptions that a brand extension creates has led to increased opportunities. My client Clorox followed my advice and launched Clorox disinfecting cleaner they called Clean-Up and Toilet Bowl Drop-Ins. After their successes which did change consumer perceptions about the brand, the changed perceptions permitted them to launch kitchen and baths cleaning tools and medical disinfectants. Dilution is a myth.

Brand extension is a concept and a definition of a type of new product. It is not open to opinions. The only opinions are the risks and benefits. Since the 80’s, there is too much history so now we know that brand extensions works and there is tons of evidence for that observation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brandextension (talkcontribs) 16:11, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Brandextension: Hello. If you are "the innovator of brand extension", it's not quite a conflict of interest, but I'd strongly advise against only sourcing information from yourself. Your edits added confusing formatting and sourced nearly all of their information from Edward M. Tauber. Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view, and rewriting the lead paragraph with sources from one author is not neutral. You are free to improve the article, but please be aware that sourcing information only from Tauber is not neutral. Tol | talk | contribs 22:17, 4 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question from Alana Perry (05:27, 11 June 2021)

edit

Hi. I want to know a bit about "coding", if that's what it's called. I want to learn a bit about how to code in wikipedia. --Alana Perry (talk) 05:27, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Alana Perry: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia has several things that could fit "coding" — we have:
  • Templates, which can be transcluded onto other pages;
  • Modules in Lua, which can be invoked with some input and will generate output based on that;
  • Bots, which make automated edits with the approval of the community.
Which of these were you thinking of? (If you don't know, just check out the pages I linked!) Tol | talk | contribs 05:31, 11 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tol, Please see the improved edits to Draft:City Savings Bank, the draft has now have reliable sources and Citations for verification of its authenticity and notability subject for approval. But before we proceed for submission, I am requesting for your review and consideration. Thank you and looking forward to response. Filipinot@yot@lk 15:03, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Filipinotayo: The draft is much better than before, and shows notability. There are a few issues within the text that I'd like you to improve before I publish it — I have used inline cleanup tags to mark them:
  • Quantify "after years" (after how many years?);
  • Add the nearby city they expanded to (which city?);
  • Add a citation for "1st ranked Loan Association and Savings in the country", and say who ranked it.
Once you have done these, I think the article can be published. Thank you! Tol | talk | contribs 18:25, 12 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

TolBot Task 1: Order of countries

edit

Hi! TolBot seems to be messing up the order of countries in Template:COVID-19 vaccination data. It places US ahead of EU and India despite the latter two regions having more number of vaccinated people. Is this ordering intentional? Please advise. Thanks! --Anirudh Emani (talk) 17:47, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Anirudh Emani: Don't worry; this is intentional. TolBot replicates the semi-automated updating (you can go to the documentation and expand those instructions). Part of this sorts the countries by total vaccinations (though TolBot uses other numbers if total vaccinations are not available). A consequence of this is that some countries with more total vaccinations but less people with at least one dose are higher than other countries with less total vaccinations but more people with one dose. (The table displays people with at least one dose.) Tol | talk | contribs 18:46, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

TolBot Task 1: Saint Helena

edit

Hi, I think TolBot should replace the label of "Saint Helena" with "Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha" as per this issue, data from Ascension is not included in Saint Helena on OWID. Thanks! --17jiangz1 (talk) 13:36, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@17jiangz1: Well, if data from Ascension is not included, then isn't "Saint Helena" fine? However, if data from Ascension and/or Tristan da Cunha was included, then perhaps this would be a good idea. Anyway, TolBot gets its country names directly from OWID (so it's not that easy to change them; I'd have to check each country and replace "Saint Helena" with "Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha"), and COVID-19 pandemic in Saint Helena redirects to COVID-19 pandemic in Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Tol | talk | contribs 16:22, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
The data from Ascension is now included in Saint Helena on OWID. Google seems to represent the data correctly, attributing it to Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. --17jiangz1 (talk) 01:44, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@17jiangz1: Ahh; I think you had a typo in the original message ("data from Ascension is not included"). Again, though, this is more of OWID's issue than mine — you could ask them to rename the data row, which would then rename the row in the template. However, I can put in a temporary measure which changes it to Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha for now. Tol | talk | contribs 01:47, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello Tol

edit

Sorry, it's the first time I've edited Wikipedia, I'm doing it on behalf of a film director, a personality in my country, he needs a Wikipedia entry translated from his original Spanish entry, they ask for it from America, it is possible that He has a project there and he has urgently asked me for this. I think that using the translation tool I can use a better way. Could we delete the Antonio Cuadri entry in English? it won't let me create the translation because the URLs collide. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Therealandy (talkcontribs) 09:59, 16 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Therealandy: If you are editing on behalf of someone for pay, you must disclose this per the paid contribution disclosure policy. You can improve the draft at Draft:Antonio Cuadri, including translating material from the Spanish Wikipedia. However, if you use translated material, you must give attribution, see the translating from other projects section of the copying within Wikipedia guideline. You could use the translation tool to translate it to, say, your sandbox, and then copy parts to the draft. Tol | talk | contribs 00:09, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Draftify script

edit

Hey! I noticed you moved Draft:Mexican Criminal Investigation Agency from mainspace back to draftspace. Firstly, thank you for the catch! Secondly, I'd recommend you use this script User:Evad37/MoveToDraft. It's much more convenient and easy then manually moving since it's literally just press one button. Also, when you normally move a page, WP automatically creates a redirect page; this script automatically queues that redirect page for R2 CSD. Curbon7 (talk) 00:00, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Curbon7: Hello; thank you! The script looks very helpful; I'll certainly use it. Tol | talk | contribs 00:02, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

Does this draft have a problem? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:BitMe ItsJustdancefan (talk) 04:45, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

It looks fine, though it probably could use some expansion. I do not understand the foreign-language sources, so I'm not fit to evaluate verifiability; however, notability could be better established if there were more sources. In short, I think it's notable, but showing coverage in a major source would be helpful. Tol | talk | contribs 04:51, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

How do I delete an image that I have added?

I would like to try out inserting images; but, I would like to be able to delete the trial image.

I am reluctant to try an image if I do not like how it looks.

Thank You So Much. --DGAAustin (talk) 15:55, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@DGAAustin: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! It looks like you use the VisualEditor. After inserting an image, you can click on it and press backspace to delete it. Tol | talk | contribs 16:52, 17 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tol. I have updated the article and improve with more related references. Sir hope you will review and found it good. I am also committed to provide accurate and useful information for wikipedia. thank you sir Abrish Naz (talk) 16:20, 18 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Abrish Naz: I still don't think that the article establishes notability well enough, but I'll leave that up to another reviewer to decide. Tol | talk | contribs 01:25, 19 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
ok sir, furthermore i also add two references in Raja Gidh to enrich the article kindly check. Thanks
Abrish Naz (talk) 01:38, 19 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Abrish Naz: It looks like you removed the {{Reflist}} — don't do that. You also shouldn't add references to the end in the "References" section; the {{Reflist}} lists them there for you. Just add them to the text, and they should show up in the section. Other than that, it looks fine! Tol | talk | contribs 01:52, 19 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sir bundle of thanks.
