Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button   or   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. Avalanche

edit

Thanks for your work on Avalanche. There's plenty of room for improvement. Please just make sure that what you write is based in verifiable sources. Let me know if you have any questions about citations or that kind of thing.   Will Beback  talk  09:53, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please proceed methodically. Just as with avalanche probing, it's necessary to be thorough. Remember that many editors working in good faith have worked on the existing text. Make sure that what you write is better.   Will Beback  talk  10:06, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your note. Sometimes it's necessary to start from scratch, either with a sentence, a paragraph, a section, or even an entire article. If you think a major rewrite is necessary then the usual way to proceed is to post it to the talk page for discussion before replacing the old text. If you think the article needs an entire overhaul, then working in a sandbox is best, such as talk:Avalanche/sandbox. Just make sure that you're working from sources.   Will Beback  talk  03:13, 20 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
I am working from sources. I'm not sure about a major rewrite; I almost certainly won't have time to do it.Thermodynamic (talk) 03:20, 20 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the rescue section, do whatever works best for you. It doesn't matter if you revise it first or split it first. Let me know when you do the split - I can help fix up the new article.   Will Beback  talk  02:38, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Per your request, you are now a "confirmed" editor, which will allow you to upload images. In case you're not aware, the rules for uploading images taken by others are very strict and rather complicated. But if you created them yourself there should be no problems. You might consider uploading directly to the sister project, Wikimedia Commons, which is the main repository for media. You'll have that option when you go through the upload screens. Let me know if you have any questions.   Will Beback  talk  21:50, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

BTW, it turns out that there is already a n article on Avalanche rescue. It appears to duplicate the material in the main article. Perhaps there was an incomplete merge. In any case, have at it.   Will Beback  talk  22:46, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I saw that. Any chance you can help me with the split and get the content into the existing avalanche rescue article? There could still be a short section on "human interaction with avalanches" that will then point at the "main article" on avalanche rescue.Thermodynamic (talk) 23:13, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
The two blocks of text were mostly identical, except for your changes and some rather lame introductory material in the rescue article. There should be a short summary of the rescue article in the main article, something like a long paragraph or a couple of short ones. Could you handle that?   Will Beback  talk  23:48, 21 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi. When you recently edited Avalanche, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Washington State and Facets (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Science lovers wanted!

Hi! I'm serving as the wikipedian-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives until June! One of my goals as resident, is to work with Wikipedians and staff to improve content on Wikipedia about people who have collections held in the Archives - most of these are scientists who held roles within the Smithsonian and/or federal government. I thought you might like to participate since you are interested in the sciences! Sign up to participate here and dive into articles needing expansion and creation on our to-do list. Feel free to make a request for images or materials at the request page, and of course, if you share your successes at the outcomes page you will receive the SIA barnstar! Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your participation! Sarah (talk) 02:19, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Citation suggestion

edit

Hi. Great job in expanding the Replisome article! If you haven't seen this yet, please check out User:Diberri's Wikipedia template filling tool (instructions). Given a PubMed ID, one can quickly produce a full citation that can be copied and pasted into a Wikipedia article. This tool can save you a lot of work and ensure that the citations are displayed in a consistent manner. Cheers. Boghog (talk) 10:35, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Restructuring the avalanche page

Let me know if you would agree with this outline User:Avalanche_Sandbox/sandbox. I don't want to proceed much further without your contributions. —Preceding undated comment added 17:18, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I'm putting together a request for information to email out to Bruce, David, Pascal, and also Jamie (for the hydrology bits) asking for recommended references: specifically to textbooks, and standard professional curriculum material. I don't mind grinding on the writing, and editing, but I am not familiar enough with the academic and professional material to have the best references for each section (aside from citing McClung, Jamieson, and Daffern over and over again). Ideally I would like to have at least one reference for each subsection in the outline, (and hopefully more) recommended by the professional and academic community. Also, Scotty T. is a solid full time slacker in Bruce's lab so maybe I could beer bribe him into taking some interest. As you can tell my contacts are confined to the Canadian community, so any references to the broader international community would be great. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avalanche Sandbox (talkcontribs) 23:47, 7 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File permission problem with File:Crown line on neve glacier snow field peak north cascades.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Crown line on neve glacier snow field peak north cascades.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:59, 10 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
