No worries. Thanks for starting it (and dropping a note into the comics project notice board - I always try and follow up on things added there in case there is anything I can add) - I created Category:Turkish comics artists a while back and am glad it is getting some use ;)

On your question: Adding photographs of living people is trickier than you'd think. With images in general a free to use image is preferred - obviously this is probably not going to happen with a comic cover (but as long as they are tagged as fair use that isn't an issue), however, if they are around then there is always the possibility that a free version can be snapped by someone (often at conventions and book signings - see how many of them there are like that: Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Alan Moore, etc.). So using the one from his blog won't satisfy the people who monitor the images and the simplest thing might be just dropping him s line - I've done that myself and it works out fine. Also sometimes they drop by and upload them which works OK too (especially as if someone sends them then you can't prove they did and there may be issues in someone releasing someone else's copyright material as free even with their consent - the intricacies of copyright can be a pain, sometimes bordering on the Kafkaesque ;) ). Hope that helps. (Emperor 02:28, 4 September 2007 (UTC))Reply

i guess i kinda get that we can not easily use the pictures from websites, than. we should ask permission and some such. but what are you saying about comic covers? i guess the solicitation copies at publishers sites are free for use, n'est ce pas?
Oh, and it's kinda cool seing Suat Yalaz over there. Heh. nice surprise.. TheDreamingCelestial03:09, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was just posting this reply when you posted - I think it covers your main question so I'll repost:
Yes sorry I have probably over-complicated the image issue (there is a big clamp down at the moment so it is on my mind as I try and fix things ;)
So for the purposes of your question there are free and non-free images, free are obviously preferred. If I take a photograph of someone I can upload that here and make that freely available for it to be used by releasing it under one of the open licensing agreements (GFDL). If I upload a comic cover that is non-free but it can't be replaced with a free alternative so I can add a fair use justification when I upload it. However, if I take a photograph someone else has taken I can try and upload it but part of the fair use justification is "Is there the potential of a free alternative" which there is so the photograph is likely to get deleted. So the best option in this case would be for someone to take a photograph of him and upload it themselves (as they have the copyright for this they can give it away), however, I think it is OK for them to send an image to you to release as free for everyone to use, as long as they are clear on the whole licensing issue. That said some people might query this (as we'd only have your word for it) so if possible the person taking the photograph should be the one to upload it.
Hope that helps. If not feel free to ask away. I can also get a second opinion on this if you want one (I may not have covered this perfectly after all). (Emperor 03:23, 4 September 2007 (UTC))Reply
I'm not sure about solicitations - I'd have to ask to clarify but I believe they are released for promotional purposes but that fundamentally the company retains copyright to the character, the logo and the specific image used so they would be considered as non-free and again you'd need to justify their use. However, as they are released for promotional purposes you can add that to the fair use statement and it makes it a more solid case. So looking at the image you uploaded: Image:Noble Causes -29.jpg it is lacking a fair use rationale which means you will probably get some automated message about it eventually and if you don't address it then it'll be deleted. Not a big issue and there are templates to make this simple - one thing though they ask that a low resolution version be used with a maximum height or breadth of 300 px so you will need to make it smaller and re-upload it first. If you'd like I can add a fair use rationale to the image (when you've fixed the height problems) as it is probably easier to show than to explain and then you can adapt that for use with any future images (the details are here: WP:FURG if you want to read up on them). The 300px maximum dimension is outlined on the fair use rationale template [1]. The fact that other images don't conform to this is an issue I'm sure will eventually be raised on those images (uploaded images that majorly violate guidelines are being deleted now, the automated process will get around to all the problematic ones, there are just an awful lot of them so it will take time) - you have to base your edits on best practice, not on examples that violate policy guidelines. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Noble Causes -29.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Noble Causes -29.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:58, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
