Reference Desk edit

You claim that my comments on the reference desk are insulting. I feel it necessary to point out that I am not singling you out. It is not difficult to see many questions given the reply: "This is for factual references, not opinions or discussions." In your case, you made two things very clear. First, you wanted a discussion. Second, you believe that the purpose of the reference desk (or even Wikipedia) is to gather all the world's knowledge. Neither the reference desk nor Wikipedia has any intention of gathering the world's knowledge. Wikipedia is merely a collection of references (which may or may not contain any valuable knowledge). As I explained, the reference desk is for providing factual references to factual questions. As time passes, more and more people feel it necessary to try and ruin the reference desk with questions asking for opinions and discussions. Some are dumb enough to claim that the reference desk is the only place to have such discussions. Hence - I feel that those who insist on doing so are simply incapable of comprehending that there are millions of discussion forums on the Internet. Only out of ignorance, pure idiocy, or intentional vandalism would anyone make a request for opinion or discussion on the reference desk. Warnings are given to remove ignorance.

Please use the reference desk to ask factual questions, such as "Have any physicists published papers on how science will change if a universal law of forces is discovered?" Who really cares for the opinions of random people who are only popping into Wikipedia between watching youtube hamster videos and midget porn. You want the opinions of people who are experts in the field - so specifically ask for them. Making the reference desk a reference desk is for your benefit. -- kainaw 03:43, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I apologize if I was incorrect in saying you had been repeatedly asked. Regardless your question was not appropriate for the reference desk. This is not a place for abstract speculation or for the sharing of experiences. Please review the guidelines for reference desk questions and refrain from posting questions which are really intended to provoke conversation or speculation.
