Administrators' newsletter – March 2019
News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2019).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- The RfC on administrator activity requirements failed to reach consensus for any proposal.
- Following discussions at the Bureaucrats' noticeboard and Wikipedia talk:Administrators, an earlier change to the restoration of adminship policy was reverted. If requested, bureaucrats will not restore administrator permissions removed due to inactivity if there have been five years without a logged administrator action; this "five year rule" does not apply to permissions removed voluntarily.
- A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.
- The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
- paid-en-wp wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private evidence related to abusive paid editing.
- checkuser-en-wp wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private requests for CheckUser. For instance, requests for IP block exemption for anonymous proxy editing should now be sent to this address instead of the functionaries-en list.
- The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
- Following the 2019 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: Base, Einsbor, Jon Kolbert, Schniggendiller, and Wim b.

- Thanks, I've added it to the article! stwalkerster (talk) 22:44, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
Hi Stwalkerster. Thanks for taking interest in my draft on the country musician Alex Harvey. I'm actually Bogong on IMDB, and the license I granted IMDb is non-exclusive, so I understand that I could technically release the content you deleted from the draft under CC BY-SA 3.0. For the time being, however, I've changed the draft so that it's no longer a paraphrase of my text on IMDB. Hope it look OK to you. In any case, the draft is still in its very early stages. Thank you for your eagerness to protect my copyright! - TaskManager (talk) 02:58, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
Art+Fem Wiki Edit-a-thon at Purchase College Library
Hi Stwalkerster! Thank you for granting me Event Coordinator status for our A+F Wikipedia Edit-a-thon tomorrow at Purchase College Library. Given that I now have this status, how do we get around our IP block? We are noticing that all of our public library computers are currently being blocked (IP 199.79.169.163). We have reached out to A+F for assistance but just wanted to see if you had any advice for us. Thank you so much for any help you can provide! --Anchorsandarrows (talk) 16:55, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Anchorsandarrows the block is marked as anonymous-only, so if you ensure everyone is logged-in you should be able to edit through the block. stwalkerster (sock | talk) 17:29, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Anchorsandarrows Actually, it's probably worth checking you can also create accounts through that anon-only block as well. If not, I can remove the account-creation part of the block as a temporary measure. stwalkerster (sock | talk) 17:32, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Stwalkerster Yes, account creation being blocked is exactly the issue we are having. If you could please lift that aspect of the block as well, we would greatly appreciate it! Please let me know if that is possible before our event begins tomorrow at 11:00am EDT. Thank you so much! --Anchorsandarrows (talk) 17:35, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Anchorsandarrows, done. Anonymous editing is still blocked, but account creation should now be possible. When does your event end? stwalkerster (talk) 17:40, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Stwalkerster This is wonderful; thank you so very much! Just confirmed that account creation is working on our public library machines. Our event ends tomorrow (3/16) at 4:00pm EDT. Anonymous editing should definitely still be blocked; totally agree on that. We really appreciate your speedy action on this. Our event will run so much smoother thanks to your help! Cheers! Anchorsandarrows (talk) 17:45, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Cool, I'll reinstate the account creation block after that time then, cheers :) stwalkerster (talk) 19:03, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi,
you removed my request for speedy deletion with "decline; moved page was not recently created". Could you explain yourself? Redirect was created yesterday, c.f. Special:Diff/887991016.
Thx Bejahend (talk) 00:30, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Simply put, I declined your speedy deletion request because it did not meet the criteria. Yes, the redirect was recently created, but as you continue to read the criteria, it states
This criterion does not apply to redirects created as a result of a page move, unless the moved page was also recently created.
The target of the redirect was created in 2016. The community has been quite particular about speedy deletions being strictly limited to meet the criteria, ambiguity and edge cases should have the opportunity to be discussed. stwalkerster (talk) 08:40, 18 March 2019 (UTC)- Thx for your explanation. I mistook this sentence, I thought that
moved page was also recently created
meant that the page with the exact name The Worst Witch (2017-2019 TV series) was recently created, not the (correctly spelled) article (two days ago it would have been a red link). - Nevertheless, the redirect should be removed somehow for the exact reason I stated, "as a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, which is not in another language pertinent to the topic". So please do me the favor and simple delete the redirect (using the correct procedure according to the policies, which I don't know in detail). I am busy now and I give up of making any further attempts for the correct procedure.

Regarding Shane Rimmer
Hey Mate!
Im the guy who added his date of death and you then removed it. I just want to say you did the right thing. I know about the sources policy but I just didn't think. However I have added it again with a source, I hope it is correct now. Have a nice day!
Sincerely, Isterbahn
