Blu-ray Disc enhancements

edit

I'm fascinated by the blast of changes you've just been making to various technical pages. One in particular has caught my attention, where you knocked out the sentence "In order to remain backward-compatible, BD-RE (and by extension, BD-R) will primarily utilize the MPEG-2 codec." I've always been bugged by that in particular, and the entire paragraph in general, which seems pretty vague and possibly misleading. HOWEVER - strangely enough its already known that at least some of Sony's initial releases ARE using MPEG-2, for which they are - not surprisingly - taking some flak. See these:

This is just my take on things, but I suspect Sony's going with MPEG-2 because: a) it's cheaper (licensing fees) and b) blu-ray provides PLENTY of space for a nice hi-def picture regardless of which coding standard you use. I'm not taking sides here; HD-DVD is fine too.
Anyway, there are two things that bugged me about that statement. "In order to remain backward-compatible" is simply not true. Merely requiring MPEG-2 decoding does NOT by itself insure any kind of backwards compatibility. The thing that's going to ensure backwards compatibility is the fact that nobody wants to blow hundreds of bucks on a player that won't play the absolutely massive library of DVDs in consumers' hands. And IMO the reason both HD formats have 3 codecs is because they want to give publishers a choice of licensing. As well as, maybe, a choice of what tools to use (everybody's got mpeg2 encoders and tools already...). The second bothersome thing is "will primarily utilize the MPEG-2 codec." That's a totally unsupported claim about future events which may or may not actually come true. I also have a funny feeling it was motivated by anti-Sony fanboyism. Not that I'm a big fan of Sony. I noticed that you flagged the article Roy Adams as copyvio and nn-bio at 07:19, 21 August 2006. I wanted to let you know that ERcheck (talkcontribs) removed these tags, in my view correctly. In general, if an article states that a person was or is a professor, that statement should be treated as an assertion of notability, which means the article can't be speedied as an nn-bio. Yup, you're right, I'd rather not have that image on my talk page. Thanks a bunch! Glad I didn't have to see that. Srose (talk) 14:19, 21 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
