User talk:Smalljim/List of the historical families of Devon
Rationale
editI started this draft as an example of how a top-level list of historical families based in Devon might look. It's part of my "Large scale proposal" in the RfC at Talk:The Grange, Broadhembury#Request for comment made. I've added the A's as a representation of a full section. For the rest, so far I'm just adding some examples: those of interest (Drake etc) and those where we already have an article of some sort (Denys, Drewe ...).
I'm not sure if inclusion of the word "family" is necessary for each entry in the list – Vivian doesn't use the word in his pedigree titles – but I think that the family articles that are supposed to be linked here should use the word for clarity: "Drewe family of Devon" is much clearer to readers who are unfamiliar with the topic than "Drewe of Devon" that could refer to a person, company, or something else entirely. Similarly, although "of <placename>" or "of Devon" in the article titles wouldn't be strictly necessary for full disambiguation in every case, it seems sensible to always include it for consistency. Where there is no article on the family, it seems useful to link the place-name to any existing article on the place because there is quite likely to be some mention of the family in that article.
I welcome comments on any of this of course, but while the RfC is running, anything relevant to that should be added to Talk:The Grange, Broadhembury. —SMALLJIM 09:28, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
To do
edit- How do I change the TOC into one of those horizontal ones that are used in large category pages? —SMALLJIM 09:39, 16 May 2016 (UTC)
- Use {{compact toc}} —SMALLJIM
