Line Mode Browser

Hi, would you look at my article Line Mode Browser and create the peer review and give me feedback?mabdul 10:56, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

FYI

188.23 is a banned editor (User:ThomasK/User:Thomaskh). He's also at 93.82. I'm checking http://toolserver.org/~soxred93/rangecontribs/index.php?type=range&ips=188.23.0.0/16&limit=250 and http://toolserver.org/~soxred93/rangecontribs/index.php?type=range&ips=93.82.0.0/16&limit=250 to see how much collateral damage there would be by rangeblocking these two ranges (both in Vienna). If you look at the daily contributions of this nasty little anti-Semite/vandal/troll, you will see that he's been evading daily blocks quite effectively; I'm not sure if anyone else is on to him yet. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 18:16, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out. I'll see about opening an appropriate case on WP:SPI --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:19, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Looks like Jpgordon knows about him. However it would be good to know (through a SPI case) if he has more than just those two ranges. Btw it looks like the other is only 93.82.0.0/20 -- the other edits seem to be other people. Antandrus (talk) 18:22, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
The SPI case would also be a good way for looking into collateral damage more closely (as well as additional ranges, as you pointed out). A checkuser may be able to pick out a good range to use. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:25, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
Someone's already filed it; see this section on ANI. Had a feeling this would come to a head. (While it's obvious to me that User:Ftsw is the same person, I don't mind waiting for the SPI case result.) Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 16:25, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
I've already gone ahead and done the block. The SPI case has other reasons to remain open which I noted in my endorsement of that case. Thanks for keeping me informed. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:36, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Megafauna vandal figures out the filter

Megafauna Man figured out how to outwit the filter: he first removes the taxobox, adds the category, and puts the taxobox back in, with three separate edits. In today's edits, it was probably a valid addition of the category—but it's still a problem. Don't know if there's anything to do at this point. See 125.164.19.208 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). First Light (talk) 07:27, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the delayed reply. This filter is getting a little complex; we may be approaching the time where we have to do something more drastic -- let me think for a bit. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:08, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Another editor left a note on my talk page about this: User talk:First Light#The return of the megafauna vandal. It really is a great deal of almost daily disruption by this IP. I don't know that a filter that prevents him from adding categories to any article would work, since he sometimes simply changes a category rather than adding a new one. I think a rangeblock on the entire IP range would get too much collateral damage. I'm out of ideas, but you know the filter and its strengths and limitations better than anyone. Thanks, First Light (talk) 16:00, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

{{user page}} edits

Hi,

I've added a note to template talk:user page#Code overhaul regarding the problem raised with my edit. Please respond there. Cheers! Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward: not at work) - talk 17:02, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Happy 10/10/10

Double Ten Day is, really, unrelated—but we don't appear to have a cool pic for this one

I suppose I should've timed this message at 10:10:10 too, but frankly, I can't be arsed. You know how it is.

Did you know... that tenten in Japaense writing are a little wiggly thing, a bit like a quotation-mark, which makes e.g. "ka" (か) into "ga" (が) or "fu" (ふ) into "bu" (ぶ) ?

So, take time out to have a bit of a giggle.

All the best, and 10-10 'till we do it again.  Chzz  ►  08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Template:Falsepositive

Do you know if it's possible to get the (redo) link that appears on the false positive template working again? It really can be troublesome to paste large edits in line by line, which is the only method that will work without causing formatting troubles (copy/paste of the "view source" will work, but messes up tags and ampersands). A recent false positive report (Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives/Reports#144.90.38.92) would have had me pasting it line by line if it weren't for the fact that seems to be a test edit (still a false positive though). Soap 17:45, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

What's a Vaublock?

I've never seen that term. HalfShadow 20:34, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

See {{vaublock}}. I think it stands for "vandalism and username block" but I'm not sure – I do know that's what it's used for. Basically it's a mix of vandalism-only account and username hard block. For that account, it was evident that it was a VOA and the username was disruptive, hence I used it. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:36, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I thought it was something like that. TPHTMA. (This Place Has Too Many Acronyms). HalfShadow 20:37, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
See 3:00 :) --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:42, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
For future reference. :-) Killiondude (talk) 19:38, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

I blame you

How can edits like this get through? I mean, shouldn't an abuse filter stop that? I decided to blame you for the lack of filtering. ;-) Killiondude (talk) 19:38, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Football league seasons

Hi,

I’m trying to edit various seasons of Football league, but I keep running into the same problem. I get the same notice, now for the 4th day running:

"Our servers are currently experiencing a technical problem. This is probably temporary and should be fixed soon. Please try again in a few minutes.

"You may be able to get further information in the #wikipedia channel on the Freenode IRC network.

"The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organisation which hosts some of the most popular sites on the Internet, including Wikipedia. It has a constant need to purchase new hardware. If you would like to help, please donate.

"If you report this error to the Wikimedia System Administrators, please include the details below. Request: POST http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1935%E2%80%9336_Football_League&action=submit, from 91.198.174.48 via amssq37.esams.wikimedia.org (squid/2.7.STABLE7) to 208.80.152.71 (208.80.152.71) Error: ERR_READ_TIMEOUT, errno [No Error] at Thu, 21 Oct 2010 08:56:18 GMT"

Can you help me, please, or direct me to someone who can?

Yours sincerely,

Apanuggpak (talk)

Apanuggpak, the error you are getting is an error in Wikipedia's servers. Nothing you did triggered this, and only the system administrators can correct the problem, but you can be sure they know about it. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:40, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm a noobie

Hello Shirik,

I'm new to Wikipedia and I made my first "real" edit the other day for Ciphertext. I saw that you were listed as a peer review volunteer and it looks like you know a lot about Computer Science and Wikipedia in general. If you could take a look at the article and give me some tips that would be great!

Thanks,

Styfle (talk) 03:36, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

I can certainly take a look at it when I get back; unfortunately I will be away until Monday. Hope that's ok. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:21, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

WP:AIV

Please note there is not edit war on the page. User:BangladeshPride has a history of only editing Bangladesh Liberation War(disruptive) and all his edits are unsourced and persistent or coping contents already in article to other sections of same article. Moreover most of his edits are tendentious and are done before reaching consensus.--UplinkAnsh (talk) 17:35, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Regardless, that's not vandalism, even if it's tendentious editing. Another noticeboard would be more appropriate. I suggest you review what WP:VAND says about what vandalism is (and isn't). --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:36, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Mlpearc from ACC

Hello, Shirik. I spend most of my time at ACC and I recently worked a request that you had left a message on. I just wanted to let you know (cuz your the only one doing this) that this message "< Account creators: Please request checkuser prior to account creation >" sure helps taking out any guess work on how to process a request (at least for me) :P. Just wanted to let you know and thanx. Mlpearc powwow 19:58, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
