Speedy deletion nomination of Otto Maja

edit

A tag has been placed on Otto Maja, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Other problems

edit

Hi Sarianna -- thanks for toning down the advertising in the article. There are a couple of other problems though -- the main one is that the article is completely without citations, so we don't know how accurate it is, or how important this person is. Are there articles about this artist in magazines or newspapers or websites that you can link to? (It's OK even if they are in Finnish, but English sources are more useful here!). Cheers --Rlandmann (talk) 14:13, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well actually there are some articles about him in few well known magazines in Finland. Tho they are in finnish. There arent probably so many internet based articles. Ive been following hes carreer for long time now and to be honnest he has been seriously achieving the most respected graphic designer in finland. Would i help if could somehow scan some magazine articles?

No -- no need to scan them (that would be a copyright problem anyway). I can help you reference the article properly, but before we start, can you please confirm that this article was never published anywhere else before? --Rlandmann (talk) 14:39, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Its 100% of my own handwork. I really respect the artist and ive been honoured to even meat him few times. You wont find that text anywhere else. Thanks for the help :) Is there any change we could add pictures to it?

We can't add pictures of his art (to respect his copyright) but if you have a picture of him that you took yourself we can use that; let me know if you have a photo and need help uploading it.
Adding references to the article is important but not too hard. Wherever you make a claim about the artist, say where you got the facts from. For example, in the "edit" view of the article:
Otto Maja was born in 1987<ref>Information about source</ref>
The information we need about the source is the same kind of stuff that would go in the bibliography of a school or college essay. So, if it was a magazine article, it might include the name of the article, name of the author, and the name, date, volume, issue, and page number of the magazine.
Don't worry too much about how you format the information yet -- if you can get one or two references in place, I can show you the format and you can just copy that :) --Rlandmann (talk) 14:55, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've interviewed the artist personally and have 100% permission to publish anything I choose from the information he's given me (all the information in this article has come from him alone). He trusts me and I'm sure will cooperate in any way necessary, I also have some photos from which I could choose one to use in this article. What do I do about the references since there aren't really any magazine articles etc I've used while doing this?

It's OK if you didn't originally use the other sources while you originally wrote this article, but for every fact in the Wikipedia article, you need to find a citation in a printed source that backs you up. While I personally have no doubt that you are reporting your facts correctly, the problem for Wikipedia is that (because anyone at all can edit an article, whether they know what they're talking about or not), readers must be able to verify that what we publish here is true -- you can read more about the importance of this here.
If there are some facts in this article that you can't back up from a published source, they might have to get trimmed out of the article; but for now, we can focus on things that you can verify from the magazine articles that you mentioned earlier.
To upload a picture that you took yourself, go to Wikipedia's sister project, WikiMedia Commons --> http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=ownwork
Take note of the name that you give to the file; we'll need that to insert the picture into the article here --Rlandmann (talk) 15:21, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I had a talk with the artist himself and he told me he wants to use the original text on his website (ottomaja.com), would it be alright to back the information up from his own website from my own article if I wrote a new piece altogether for wikipedia which only had the essential information without the advertisement and chitchat?

Sure -- that's a good solution to a big part of the problem. There really are two issues here -- one is Verifiability (which your suggestion solves), the other is Notability. As you know, pretty much anybody can put up a website about themselves; Wikipedia readers need to be able to see how important someone or something is. The main way that we demonstrate this "notability" is to show that the person or product is being written about in books, newspapers, and magazines. So the magazine articles about the artist are still very important — it should not be hard to find at least one or two facts in each magazine article that you could reference in the Wikipedia article. Thanks for sticking with this! :) --Rlandmann (talk) 16:14, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the help, I now did most of the changes necessary. Does the article need to have the code in order to show? The references are in the edit version, but do they need to show in the actual article? Do I need to change/do something else?

Yeah, there was just a little more code; I also compacted the references down a little. Some references to "old media" like magazines would still really help -- for obvious reasons, facebook and blogs don't help much to prove that somebody is important and noteworthy ;) --Rlandmann (talk) 17:43, 10 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
