Empúries

I am aware of all that, but it remains true that place names are commonly translated into other languages. In English, we say Germany, not Deutschland, Spain, not España, and Catalonia, not Catalunya. Thus, if English-language publications favour Ampurias over Empúries, it will be used. Neither spelling is incorrect in English, Empúries would be wrong in Spanish and Ampurias wrong in Catalan, but English has not adopted a standard form for such a relatively small city. Therefore, usage is left to the author. I don't mind whatever form is used predominantly, but it is a waste of time to change every instance of the word Ampurias to Empúries just because it is Catalan: this isn't a Catalan encyclopaedia. I am accepting that the translations of the Francoist regime exist and have an influence in English scholarship. For example, in Archibald Lewis' The Development of Southern French and Catalan Society (718–1051) (1965), upon which I rely heavily for my history of that region in that period, uses Ampurias. Why should I switch usage from the source I am citing, for instance? It's all no big deal. Notice that the term Persia comes from what the Greeks called it and not from what its inhabitants called it. Foreign languages have foreign usages, simple as that. My only real worry with changing to Catalan forms universally is that there will be that disjunct between sources used and the articles and that alternate forms may be lost accidentally (as Ampurias was). It is important that the Wikipedian reader at least know that the alternative forms exist and that he is readily able to understand the citations provided if he choses to verify the articles. That's my only worry. Other than that I still maintain that either form is correct in English and if the Catalan is historically and currently more popular (as it is) then it should be preferred generally. Antoni Maria Claret i Clarà

Why did you moved this page without having any discussion?? In any case, the most common name of the Saint is Antonio María Claret, this page needs to be back where it was and then placed on Wikipedia:Request move (Caracas1830 21:28, 24 August 2007 (UTC))

Changing his name into Catalan is not justified since this is not Catalan Wikipedia, therefore and following the other languages his name should be then in English: Anthony(Caracas1830 21:34, 24 August 2007 (UTC))

Also is less justified to translate a catalan name to spanish name in the english wikipedia.--Saltamarges 21:36, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Let's use the English then, just like the other wikipedias use the name in their languages (Caracas1830 21:39, 24 August 2007 (UTC))
