Finkelstein reaction This reaction involves an exchange of chlorine or bromine present in a chloro or bromoalkane with iodine. When a chloroalkane or a bromoalkane is heated with sodium iodide in acetone or methanol,a corresponding iodoalkane is obtained.

R-CH2+NaI----(acetone,heat)---->R-CH2-I+NaCl It is helpful in preparatio of iodoalkanes which are difficult to be preapred by direct iodination of alkanes.
