Navratri vs. Navratra edit

hi SM7 can you please help me with the Navaratri edit? I thought the correct one would be नवरात्रि instead of नवरात्र which I read as "navaratra" can you please help me to understand? I thank you for your correction. Amritakripa (talk) 20:10, 2 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Amritakripa: Hi, To the best of my knowledge, In Sanskrit language the correct word is नवरात्र (Navratra), a word in masculine gender. though, रात्रि (ratri) is a word in feminine gender, "a collection of nine nights" or "a duration of nine nights" (i.e. नव+रात्रि) is नवरात्र. just like अहोरात्र (अहः + रात्रि; a day and a night)! Please give me some time to provide proof from any good Sanskrit Dictionary (Or you may consult one yourself). Thanks !--SM7--talk-- 20:23, 2 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Amritakripa (talk) 20:40, 2 October 2016 (UTC) I stand corrected... I took a simplistic view which was that the wikipedia entry was "Navaratri" and the sanskrit phonetically said "Navaratra". I really really appreciate your extensive explanation and thank you for your help with this. It's good people like yourself who make the Internet a better place.Reply

@Amritakripa: here it is p. 531 middle section "-ratra m. (masculine) a period of 9 days". And this also notes about the another variant "-ratrika" (that would be -रात्रिक in devnagari, again a masculine word) for this period in aashvin. I hope this will clarify your doubt. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Aunrihar, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Saidpur. Bhojpuri in Trinidad edit

Moin SM7,
do you accidentally happen to have any sources to determine how many native Bhojpuri speakers there are in Trinidad and Tobago? The easiest source is Ethnologue.com which cites linguist Jacques Leclerc, but I find his figures odd - the language is dying out in T&T, but for 1996 he named 16.000 speakers (probably people able to speak Bhojpuri, not native speakers), and for 2003 he named 20.000. Or at least Ethnologue cites him for that figure. Do you know of any valid statistics for that?
Thanks and kind regards, Grueslayer 08:56, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Grueslayer:, It is really difficult to find out the exact statistics. Actually I am far behind you, because I never searched for such data regarding T&T. Google is no much help. this Census (?)Report has nothing about languages.
I found an old article on JSTOR (23619888) which quotes - Using Roger Bell's sociolinguistics formula, Sealey (1983: TB-1-2) arrives at the following profile of Trinidad Bhojpuri: 'A dialect of "mainland" Bhojpuri', 'a Tolerated Language', 'spoken as an L1 by less than 3 per cent of the population' and 'used as a language of restricted internal communication', Trinidad Bhojpuri monolinguals are generally over 75 years of age, and Trinidad Bhojpuri and Trinidad English bilinguals (including semi-speakers) are generally in the age group of 55 75 years. The fluent speakers of that language are Hindus who have remained fairly isolated in rural areas. [Sealey, W. (in collaboration with P.Aquing). 1983. 'A sociolinguistic profile of Trinidad'. Paper presented for the Caribbean Lexicography Project, June 1983, (Mimeo).]
Above mention of L1 speakers is based on 1970 data. I believe the numbers 20,000 L1 speakers of Bhojpuri is possible only when about 2% of the population still speaks it as L1. Hard to say.
Anyway, I will keep trying to search for correct figures. Thanks for your question.--SM7--talk-- 12:06, 17 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi SM7,
thanks for that paper - looks to me like at least monolinguals have died out over time. I have contacted a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at UWI, but she already signalled me that there is no recent statistics on this matter. *sigh*
