GMOs

Do you want to live in a world where weeds are tolerant to herbicides, causing farmers to use more and more herbicides? Do you want to live in a world where there is a major increase in allergies? Do you want to live in a world where all plants that are consumed by humans are GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) or in a world that there are antibiotic resistant super-diseases? GMOs are made by adding DNA from other organism into a crop causing it to do a specific task, like being tolerant to herbicides. One of the major problems with GM (Genetically Modified) food is that it is poorly tested and even though the tests were negative GM foods are on the market. Two other major problems are that GMOs are unlabeled. Once a GM food is created the genetic contamination cannot be cleaned up or contained. Some companies that produce GMO foods were also behind the development of risky chemicals suck as DDT and Agent Orange.

GMOs have not been tested as much as they should. Even though they have had some testing, the results show that they should not have been put on the market. A study showed that when young rats were fed GM potatoes, they developed pre-cancerous cell growth, damaged immune systems, partial atrophy of the liver and an inhibited development of the brain, livers and testicles. Cows fed GM corn died. Twice the number of chickens died when fed GM corn compared to those fed natural corn. Soon after GM soy was introduced to the UK, soy allergies increased by 50%.

The European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong all have labeling laws for all GM food but The United Stated and Canada has not passed a law. 60 - 70% of the food in grocery stores in Canada is GM food. We need labeling for GM food so it is essential to get laws passed to get GM food labeled. The consequences are catastrophic to both humans and the environment if we continue eating GM food, but we need labeling laws to know if we are eating it or not.

The same biotech company, Monsanto, that makes Roundup Ready Soy, which is soy that is resistant to herbicides allowing you to use 70% more herbicides, produces and sells the herbicide Roundup used on those crops. Using more herbicides is dangerous due to biological amplification. The companies claim that GMO crops will not contain herbicides. That is true but the weeds will become immune to the amount of herbicide used making the farmer use more and more herbicides. Eventually the herbicide resistant gene will be passed onto weed relatives making herbicide-resistant super weeds. Round Up Ready crops will survive being sprayed with herbicides allowing farmers to use more herbicides. Monsanto makes 160 million gallons of Roundup herbicide a year. This amount of herbicides is extremely bad for the environment.

If biotech companies continue creating and using GM food, the GM food will take over all other natural crops and we can’t reverse this. So if these bio-tech companies produce a GM food that is deadly, causes cancer or makes us sick, there is no way to stop it. The only way to stop the creation of GM food is to know if we are eating it or not and the only way to know that is to have mandatory labeling laws. If most people stop eating GM food then the biotech companies would not produce it anymore. The biotech companies have no real knowledge of what effects this unnatural product can have on human health or the health of our planet.
