THE POLYTECHNIC CHOIR
editThe Polytechnic of Namibia choir also known as “Poly Choir” was established in 1996 due to the inception of the institute from the University of Namibia. The choir was formed by a few number of students who got together to share their musical talent. Mr Beukus, Mr Pit and Mr Hipontoka took over the choir as the conductors. In 2003 Mr Mike Kisting officially picked up where the previous conductors left off, he helped the choir with formal voice training, transforming what was once known as a group of students into a respective choir ,with the assistance of Mr Waynand Narimab as the as the junior conductor. The choir consist of increasing 54 members , with auditions being held annually at the beginning of every academic year.
Every year in April the choir members old and new travel to Shalom Center, 10 km out of Windhoek to bond as one, they get to know each other through games and church services. The members teach other different vernacular songs and do group bonding tasks.
The respective choral group is known for the message they convey through their golden voice, “singing”. Also famous for the Anti-Corruption SAVE THE NATION song. The choir is known for bringing change in people’s lives. For the last two years 2011 and 2012 the Poly Choir has been driving throughout deserted rural areas like Dordabis, Gobabis, Epukiro, Outjo and khorixa to mention a few, to motivate the young people, and sharing the importance of education to learners from grade one to twelve, leaving them with the desire of wanting to reaching tertiary education some day. The choir also went back to Uis with the help of the SRC 2012 to repaint the dining hall of Petrus Ganeb Secondary school.
The Choir has regular performances at NTN and collaboration performances with choirs such as the likes of Joyous Celebration from South Africa and BK’s of which both are gospel choirs. The choir is busy throughout the year as they have to performs at every graduation ceremony that occurs twice a year The Polytechnic. For all the hard work the members are granted a year end trip for a weekend just to have fun and release all the stress.
At the end of the day it is a good feeling to know that you are part of something big, where you are not judged nor discriminated against, where you learn more, get to do more than what you are able to and most importantly you get to be part of big family which you never had, its almost as if you are always home.
