Edit summaries

edit

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. --Pak21 16:00, 3 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP Policies you may want to familiarize yourself with

edit

Hi Ronin,

Firstly, thank you for deciding to contribute to Wikipedia pages regarding The Terminator movies!

I've noticed that a lot of your edits have been reverted due to their being inconsistent with Wikipedia policies. I would like to draw your attention to those policies, so that you may better understand them, and so you can be more confident that your contributions are in accord with Wikipedia's goals.

For the most part, the edits I have seen you make on the Terminator articles go against WP:NPOV. I hope I can help point you towards the needs underlined in this policy. I understand that as a new editor, seeing your edits frequently reverted without explanation can be frustrating -- It's my goal here to help you understand A) you needn't take it personally , and B) exactly why your edits have been reverted, and how you can improve them so that they will be accepted.

WP:NPOV is the policy that describes how Wikipedia articles must be written in a neutral point of view. Click on WP:NPOV to read the policy, and how you might better tailor your edits to meet it, for the benefit of our common goals on Wikipedia.

A similar policy is the one against "original research", WP:NOR. Original research in this context usually applies to one's own interpretations of things. For example, in the Terminator movies, you may have your own interpretation of Sarah Connor's motives. However, your opinion -- while perfectly suited to other venues, such as your own web page, discussion/forum pages, or even a personal essay -- are not "encyclopedic", which is why opinion cannot be included in Wikipedia.

A general discussion on what Wikipedia is and is not can be found here: Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not.

My suggestion is that you familiarize yourself with these policies; these are here to help define for you what Wikipedia is, what it isn't, and the policies that contributions need to adhere by.

For general editing help, you can always go to WP:HELP. the main help page. At the top of this page (your talk page), you'll see that a "welcome" user placed a template full of good links to help you familiarize yourself with how to (and how not to) edit Wikipedia.

Other Wikipedia editors who are familiar with these policies will undoubtedly be delighted to help you tailor your edits to meet them -- I encourage you to use the "talk" (aka Discussion) pages attached to each article to ask questions about your edits if you are in any question over whether they are in accord with Wikipedia policy, and how they may be best done to this effect.

Again, we are all glad that you have chosen to contribute! If you have any questions after browsing the links to Wikipedia policy I've outlined here, please feel free to ask on my talk page, or anyone's talk page who is involved with a page you are editing.

You are also, like everyone, encouraged to discuss article-specific questions on the talk pages of each article, especially if you find your edits frequently being reverted there -- someone familiar with the article will usually be happy to help you guide your edits.

I hope you enjoy your editing!

Kane (Highlander)

edit

Hello,

Unfortunately your edits to Kane (Highlander) have been reverted because they didn't follow WP:NPOV and WP:CITE. It is important that Wikipedia articles be written in a non-point of view, balanced style and cite reliable sources, so that other editors can verify the facts. ManfrenjenStJohn gave you a lot of good advice above, so I'm not going to repeat them, but I can only urge you to follow them so that your edits don't get reverted. It can be extremely frustrating and can be avoided by carefully familiarizing oneself with the policies. You are welcome to discuss topics on the relevant talk pages, and the "Welcome" template above gives you useful links if you need help. We are glad that you are here, so keep up the enthusiasm, and happy editing. Have a nice day. Rosenknospe 10:26, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

A friendly reminder

edit
  Edit summary reminder
Hello. I noticed that your edit to RMS Titanic did not include an edit summary. Please remember to use one for every edit, even minor ones. You can enable the wiki software to prompt you for one before making an edit by setting your user preferences (under Editing) to "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary". Thanks, -MBK004 15:40, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ls ps2.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Ls ps2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:36, 31 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please do not add content without citing reliable sources, as you did to Cell (Dragon Ball). Before making potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources please take this opportunity to add your reference to the article. Contact me if you need assistance adding references. Thank you. One Nation

edit

Look, I was no fan of One Nation either, but you can't just jump in and call them racist. They've denied it, and it's POV for you to include it. It might be all right to say in the text that they have been accused of being racist, but only with reliable sources. Remember, no original research. Thanks. February 2012

edit

Please do not add original research or novel syntheses of published material to articles as you apparently did to Ip Man 2. Please cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Thank you. You might wish to read up on the MOS on how to write plot summaries before introducing dubious information into the plot outline again. Do take a look at how the synopsis of Rocky 4 was written, of which the plot shares similarities. The writeup mentions how the antagonist boxer was remorseless after beating Apollo creed to death, without labeling it a murder, nor did it embellish the "evilness" of the character. Zhanzhao (talk) 07:04, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your recent editing history at Ip Man 2 shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.

To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
