Image:Chrisjudd.jpg edit

This image is not a "sporting event poster", but rather is a picture of a sports person. I don't believe that Wikipedia can use this image under fair use provisions. Please don't upload any more player profile images without first getting permission from the photographer / club. Snottygobble | Talk 06:28, 25 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

This image is termed fair use in Australia. John_Worsfold also has a similar picture.
Firstly, Australia doesn't have "fair use" provisions. It has "fair dealing" provisions, which most definitely do not cover pictures like this. Secondly, even if you could legally use the image under Australian copyright law, that would only cover your right to upload it to Wikipedia. Since the Wikipedia servers are located in the U.S., Wikipedia's right to serve the image depends upon U.S. copyright law, not Australian copyright law. Thirdly, Image:Captainwoosha.jpg was the first contribution of a new user, and it has been tagged for deletion, so we can hardly take that as evidence that Image:ChrisJudd.jpg is appropriate, can we?
I have tagged the image for deletion. Please don't update any more player profile images. We have to take a hard line on these copyright issues, but your other contributions are very welcome, so please don't feel discouraged or offended. Snottygobble | Talk 06:55, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I know the photographer that takes alot of the AFL's photos independantly. How do I go about getting the appriopriate permissions for wikipedia?
Contact the photographer and ask whether he or she would be willing to release the photos under the GFDL. There are some example requests for permission that you might like to use, but then again if you know the photographer well then you might like to do things rather more informally. Once you have permission, simply edit the Image page to indicate that permission has been granted. Snottygobble | Talk 07:56, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
