your message edit

Dear Robert

You talk so much cool-headed sense. Yes, I have to move on and forget the angst; your psychological assessment is perceptive, although I never thought that WP was perfect; its failures were what drove me to work at it .

I'm still surprised that it marshals so much energy among so many unpaid contributors. I still haven't quite worked out the reasons for this, but it does augur well for the future of the Internet as an instrument of democracy. Perhaps WP what we all hoped the Internet might be, but it has taken nearly 15 years for it to become a significant force.

Thank you sincerely for your support. I've had a bad headache for the last four days, which has made it hard to concentrate; but that's subsiding quickly; I'm glad that Redwolf cut the trial short by a day. I must move on. If they significantly reform the RfA process, I'd feel a lot better about it; then the whole thing might not have been entirely in vain.

In future, I'd prefer to correspond by email. I'll send a copy of this response to the address from which you posted the scanned page from the Third Symphony.

I value your friendship.

Tony

Librarian here at this ip, mistaken identity edit

Hi, I am a librarian here at a college. I do not want the college to be known publicly because I am not going through the PR Department. We have had problems before with students apparently vandalizing wikipedia and then having our ENTIRE campus IP blocked. it is not fair to penalize a campus for the actions of one or two students, operating in their private dorm rooms outside the purview of the Information Technology Department. Do you have any suggestions? Because everyone on the campus is getting "NEW MESSAGES" and probably reading your reply. Thanks. Vandalism Charge edit

Dear Sir, I am user 207.142.131.239, which you have claimed is adding nonsense to a Wikipedia entry. I would highly appreciate knowing to which entry you claim I am vandalizing. Everything I have added to Wikipedia is based on independent knowledge or research. From time to time, however, my computer does hang up on me, and it is possible that something may have been inadvertently deleted. I apologize if that is the case. (preceding unsigned comment by 128.190.62.54 (talk • contribs) 3 November 2005)

The entry in question refered to as "vandalism" is completely true and factual. If representatives of Wikipedia refer to the truth as "nonsense", then I'm curious about any credibility Wikipedia claims to have as an authoritative source. (preceding unsigned comment by 207.232.184.102 (talk • contribs) 3 November 2005)
I'm not sure how, but this message about posting nonsense to pages is getting to all sorts of people. I'm using tor, but I didn't think I had it set up for web browsing, but perhaps I did and forgot about it. Maybe this address is a tor exit point. I do know I've never posted nonsense to any wikipedia article, though.
The only change I've ever made is to an article about tarantulas, pointing out that their hair is actually called setae. I added two or three words, and it was completely factual. (preceding unsigned comment by 68.112.8.34 (talk • contribs) 3 November 2005)
Just curious, I created the article post anesthesia care unit (though I somehow wasn't logged in when I did), and my un-logged in identity got a message asking me to cease with the vandalism. Perhaps I'm missing some subtlety here, but how is a factual article vandalism? Thanks. Natalya 02:54, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
Your vandalism message was sent to me also. I have written several biographies to a high standard, and have improved others with corrections and additions. All of my work includes sources and references, and I am very proud of my contributions. It is disheartening that after dozens and dozens of hours of research, work and writing, the very first feedback I recieve is that I am vandalizing Wikipedia. From reading the messages above, it seems fairly obvious that you have made some sort of error in sending out your messages. Please correct your error. S. D. (preceding unsigned comment by Stephen DeSilva (talk • contribs) 4 November 2005)

The answer is probably that you are all completely innocent of vandalism, and recipients of a message that was intended for a vandal. This is easy to explain for contributors who have not created an account, and who therefore edit anonymously. Your contributions appear to come from the same source as any other editor without an account who uses the same IP address. On some networks, the IP address through which you access the network may be shared by a large number of computers. The points you all raise above are important, so I will investigate them all and when and if I find the answer I will let you know. Meanwhile, my apologies for any inconvenience caused. I assure you I value all constructive contributions to Wikipedia. --RobertGtalk 09:27, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I have now investigated all the questions above. It appears that all the above users who were editing without being logged in have received the message erroneously. This explanation on the offending user's talk page may throw light on the matter. The edit which I was referring to as "nonsense" was this one, for which I think "nonsense" is a fair description. Once again my apologies to all innocent bystanders. I have communicated separately with users Natalya and Stephen DeSilva. --RobertGtalk 10:35, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks For The Explanation edit

Thanks for the explanation! That makes lots of sense now (imagine a collective "Ahhh, I see"). I originally meant to be logged in when I created the article, but my computer decided it would be funny to log me out. Thanks again. -- Natalya 12:12, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Witold Lutosławski edit

Hi Robert! Yes, I will watch over this excellent article for you. I should be around much of the day on Sunday. (By the way, congratulations on getting it featured!) For what it's worth, main page articles usually are watched over fairly decently by regular RC patrollers, although since Lutosławski isn't exactly a pop culture icon, he could use with some extra attention, and I'll do it for you. Best wishes, Antandrus (talk) 15:52, 4 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Alleged vandalism edit

Dear RobertG, please explain why you believe I have been adding 'nonsense' to Wikipedia by pointing out the specific cases. I have no intention of adding nonsense to Wikipedia or of carrying out any form of vandalism. (preceding unsigned comment by 88.105.181.35 (talk • contribs) 4 November 2005)

Hi, I think the introduction of "The art of the fugue" wikipedia page is not very accurate. Recent studies suggest that the Art of Fugue was composed in the early 1740's. Actually the statement "A 1742 fair copy manuscript contains Contrapuncti I--III, V--IX, and XI--XIII, plus the octave and retrograde canons and an earlier version of Contrapunctus X" in the second section ("The sources") seems to be in contradiction with the introduction. User talk:4.242.198.138 edit

I notice that you gave this user a warning earlier. This person comes in from the whole range of 4.242.*.* and edits. While one or two of the edits are useful most of the work is vandalistic in nature. For some strange reason they hit Circuit City and Pumpkin pie with edits that are easy to see. The big problem is that they also make sneaky edits to pages of the type 1986 to 1987. With the exception of someone from that range who was making proper additions yesterday I have taken to blocking the IP as soon as a vandalistic edit is made without a warning. Spam links edit

Hi Robert! Yes, they're somewhere in that gray area between spam and semi-useful. My instinct is to take them out, as is my instinct with anything that gets added by copy-and-paste to many different articles, especially by an anon that does nothing else. Oh, you mean here? Yes, I can explain that. The user in question uploaded a spam link to Wikipedia by creating a new page. I deleted the page as spam, and since I was not going to be around much immediately thereafter thought I would alert other administrators, particularly in view of that user's subsequently abusive behaviour. Hello edit

Hi, you left a message about a page I began, the page was titled Seibertron. To answer your question, I am not a bot, but my name is Big Bot because that is my name on Seibertron.com. We at Seibertron.com had noticed that Newgrounds.com and a few other sites had created pages about themselves, and we decided, being one of the largest web sites devoted to the Transformers fanbase, that we should have our own wiki page.

I also noticed that soon after the page was created, it was marked for deletion. I would like to have that mark removed, as I understand that when the page first started, there was little content, but if you return to the page now, you can see that it has grown. The members of Seibertron have started collaborating, trying to fill the page with all of our importand information. I know that you a moderator, so we'd appreciate it if you'd remove the mark.

Thanks,

Big Bot

Hi. Thanks for your note requesting that I put the panel on the main page. I like some of the draft redesigns, and will probably have some input myself over the few days (time permitting). Since it's the main page, and hence "be bold" is less relevant, I am erring on the side of caution. So before I go ahead and place the panel on the main page (which I will do tomorrow if no-one has objected - and if no-one has beaten me to it) can I check a couple of points? First, did WikiProject Usability delegate you to ask admins for assistance, or is it entirely your own idea? - and can you refer me to the relevant discussions? Secondly, is there a consensus about when voting will end, or did you really mean me to make that decision all by myself?! It does seem to me that 28th might be a bit soon. In preparation, assuming that everything is above board as I expect, I have posted a note on the Main page's talk page to ask if there are any objections. Best regards, RobertGtalk 18:03, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. No authority has ever been delegated on this project, from Usability, nor from within this project itself: it has been entirely ad hoc from the beginning. Note that I drafted and have been posting this project's various notices on the Main Page's talk page (and the project's talk page), for weeks, including the current green notice box. The reason I contacted you is that a question came to mind: even though the Main Page's talk page is the official place for this type of notice, will most users visit the talk page and learn that a decision is being made that will affect everyone? I'm the one who created and posted the original end date for the election, and I don't object to it being extended. And considering the exposure the Main Page notice will bring to the project, I doubt anyone else will either. Thank you for posting a query to the Main Page's talk page -- I hadn't thought of that. Thank you for your involvement. --Go for it! 20:42, 24 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have removed the main page redesign template from the main page as it is unecessary, distracting, and blatantly innapropriate for the front page. As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Hi Robert

Perhaps the Messiaen article will succeed in the FAC room; if so, well and good—I agree with the strengths that people are highlighting.

I wonder whether you like the music of Michael Tippett. I have a special liking for some of his music, and the WP article on him is, frankly, not good.

Another Esperanzial note... edit

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. I just added a sample from Soixante-quatre durées to the article. There's a problem with Méditations though, since I only have the Latry version and the article already has a Latry performance of Transports de joie. I reckon we might have problems if we use one recording for two pieces. Maybe I'll find a different version of Transports de joie later and upload it instead of Latry's version, then we can have a sample from Méditations. Hmm? Jashiin 17:16, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are/were links to the article from Tiny Tove and its discussion page. I already put a request for undeleting this article on the appropriate page. Ik.pas.aan 00:40, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

re: reposted bandcruft edit

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily, it's possible to add redlinks to one's watchlist, which I've done now. — Mar. 6, '06 [10:36] <freakofnurxture|talk>

Isaac T. Madsen edit

Hi, I was reverting a vandalism run from an anonymous IP - mostly he was adding Angus O'Mann to articles. I did a quick Google for Isaac T. Madsen and he didn't seem notable enough to be in the list. But if I've missed anything please let me know. Dlyons493 Talk 21:11, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
