OKAPYA VILLAGE

Okapya is a very small village in Omusati region in the northern part of Namibia. Okapya village is situated in the northwest and northeast of Oshikuku. The village was officially founded in the 1950’s. Okapya was used as abase of par pets or informants of the South Africans by the South Africans during the South African Border War and Namibian War of Independence. The place normally receives an annual average rainfall of 332 millimeters (14.8in), although in the 2008/2009 rainy season 423 millimeters(17,5) were measured. In the year 2000, Okapya was the only notified village among all the villages near by Oshikuku, with a population of just over 600. The language spoken in the village is Oshiwambo, but people would refer to the language being spoken as Otshikwambi. Okapya is the hottest place in the Northern Namibia with the temperature ranging between 26 and 30 degree Celsius.

DEVELOPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE

Okapya has experienced much development ever since the Namibian Independence on 21 March 1990. In 2009 a healthy municipal building was inaugurated by the founding father of Namibia Dr Sam Nuujoma. There are plenty of mini shopping malls. Okapya featured a combined school, Joseph Nelende Combine School named after Joseph Nelende the very first leader of Okapya village.

Okapya has a football team known as Young Stars.
