Rajinder Kambo
[1]wellwishes for every reader ,I rajinder kambo is starting a series about our bollywood stars .to start ,i have decided to write something about Pole-star dharmendra who has his own shine during the hay time of any other star...................
Dharmendra : The Pole Star of Bollywood Dharmendra is the only bollywood actor who remained number two against every superstar since 1960,in other words we can say he is the Pole Star (Dhruv Tara) of Bollywood. He showed his presence in the very first year of his Career that is 1961 and his first release Shola aur Shabnam was ranked at 10th position according to Film Trade Guide in the list of business done by the movies.Anpadh was ranked 7th in 1962,Begana and Bandhni attracted critics and audiences towards Dharmendra in 1963. But Dharmendra attracted top producers and directors for coming years by showing his versatility in 1964 as Haqeekat was number 7 along with different types of roles in Aap ki Parshayian(romantic ) Aayee Milan Ki Bela (negative character )Mera qasoor kya hai (herine oriented fill up)Ganga Ki Lehren(social emotional comedy).1965 had Kaazal at number 10 while Purnima,Akashdeep and Suraj aur Chanda were also noticeable.
These were the starting 5 years with less - important roles as the trend was sobbing emotional heroine oriented movies .The trimurty Raj Dalip Dev was growing old ,second line trimurty were Shammi kapoor ,Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar had mature looks,Shashi Kapoor,Manoj Kumar,Bishwajit and Joy Mukerjee were trying to establish and were good for medium budget movies and that was the age of mythological, spying, wrestling and family dramas but Bollywood needed a star and here they got a He-man in 1966 by Phool aur Pather. With Phool aur Pather Dharmendra (as Shaka the first shirt - less hero ) become different among the other stars as the movie ranked number one while Aye Din Bahar Ke was at 7th position and both roles were poles apart but perfectly performed by the Greek-cupid-god Dharmendra (as renamed by Javed Akhtar in a TV show) Anupama, Devar,Baharein Phir Bhi Aayeingi; Mamta,Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya were all the remarkable movies by the new born star. Again 1967 had the heroine oriented movies like Manazli Didi,Ghar Ka Chirag and Chandan Ka Palna. 1968 again had the top - grosser Ankhein along with other hits like Izzat (today's C M Jailalitha was one of the heroines),Baazi,Mere Humdum Mere Dost and Shikar. 1969 was the year of Rajesh Khanna who emerged as a real superstar by the tremendous success of Aradhna. To check the graphs of pole star v/s super star let us see first 25 movies of the year. Rajesh Khanna bagged Aradhna at number one,Do Raste at 2,Bandhan at 8,Ittefaq at 11,Doli at 15 besides other good movies of other stars Dharmendra was number two or can say shining like ever the Pole Star style with Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke at 7,Yakeen at 10,Aadmi aur Insaan at 13,Pyar hi Pyar at 14 and Sayakaam at 25th position. This was also golden period for Jeetendra (the jumping jack)with Jeene ki Rah at 6,Waris at 9,Jigri Dost at 20. Yahoo-star Shammi Kapoor at 4th with Prince and 24th with Tum se achha kaun hai.Jubilee Kumar (Rajinder Kumar ) was also with jubilee hits Talash at 15(though lost money as made with 1 crore in those time) and Anjaana at 18.Ace-hero Sunil Dutt was at 14 with Chiraag. The best romantic song-singing-star Shashi Kapoor had his piece of sweet pie with Pyar ka Mausam at 5,Jahan pyar mile at 21 and Raja Sahib at 23. Sanjay khan also shown his presence with Ek Phool do maali at 3 and Inteqaam at 16 Bharat @Manoj kumar was at 22nd position with Saajan. In this way Dharmendra was standing with Angad-feet. 1970 was the year for Kaka with five hits and this is strange but true that Dharam had also five hits. Rajesh Khanna had Aan Milo Sajna ,Kati Patang, Sacha Jhutha, Safar and The Train while Dharmendra also had Ishq Par Zor Nahin,Sharafat, Jeevan Mrityu,Mann Ki Ankhein and Kab Kyon aur Kahan? On the other hand Jeetendra was also doing very well with bundle of hits like Himmat,Humjoli,Jawab,Maa aur Mamta, Mere Hamsafar and Naya Rasta.....and veterans were still there Dev Anand with top grosser of the year Johnny Mera Naam, Raj Kapoor with Mera Naam Joker, Dalip with Gopi, Raj Kumar with Heer Ranjha,Rajendra Kumar with Dharti,Ganwar and Geet,Shammi Kapoor as Pagla Kahin Ka,Manoj with Pehchan,Yaadgaar and Purab aur Pashchim, and emergence of Sanjeev with Khillona.
1971 was again year of Rajesh Khanna with super-hits like top grosser of the year Amar Prem, Andaz at 2,Anand at 5,Dushman at 6 ,Haathi mere Sathi ,Maryada at 9 and Mehboob ki Mehndi (very good music though flopped)Jeetendra was going still very good with Caravan at 3,Banphool,BikhreMoti,Chahat and Ek Naari Ek Brahamchari BUT again Dharmendra had 4 hits-- Mera Gaon Mera Desh at 4,Guddi at 8,Naya Zamana at 10 and Rakhwala while stalwarts like Showman of Century Raj Kapoor was present with Kal Aaj aur Kal ,Evergreen Star Devanand with superhit Hare Ram Hare Krishna and Gambler, Star Comedian Mahmood had Main Sundar Hoon and Lakhon Mein Ek,Shammi Kapoor had almost last hits as hero like Andaz along with Jawan Mohabbat also Rajendra Kumar was ending his innings as jubilee star with Aap Aye Bahar Aayee, Manoj had Balidaan while Sunil Dutt had Reshma aur Shera, and there were two new stars to grow big as Sanjeev Kumar with Paras and Man Mandir Alongwith Amitabh who was still waiting for success showing negative appearence in Parwana. Again it was Dharmendra on top in 1972 with Seeta aur Geeta while Raja Jaani was at 3,Lalkaar,Samadhi and Do Chor were super hit, Rajesh Khanna bagged number at 6 for Apna Desh at 9 for Bawarchi, Anuraag,Maalik and Mere Jeevan Sathi were also good movies. Jeetndra going slow with Parichay,Bhai ho to aisa,Ek Bechara and Ek Hasina Do Diwane Raaj Kumar with his magic voice was at number 2 with Pakeezah, Manoj had Shor and Be-imaan along with hits of different genres ;Victoria 203,Koshish,Rampur ka lakshman,Daastan by tragedy king Dalipsahib, Jawani Diwani, Gora aur Kala and Amitabh had to still wait for hits but showed his presence by Ek Nazar and Bombay to Goa. Though 1973 was the year of Bobby but Dharmendra ruled again with Yaadon Ki Barat at number 3,with many Solo - star hits like Loafer at number 8,Jheel Ke US Paar, Jugnu,Jwar Bhatta, Keemat,Phagun,Kahani Kismat Ki and also Blackmail .This year showed the rising of Amitabh with Zanjeer at number 2 Abhimaan at number 5,also Bandhe Haath and Saudagar but Rajesh Khanna was shining with Daag at number 6 and Namak Haram at number 10,Raja Rani along with experimental flop Avishkaar. Dev Anand had his last roar as young- looking hero in Shareef Badmash, Banarasi Babu,Joshila and Chhupa Rustom. Other hits of the year were Dharma,Aa Gale Lag Ja,Manchali,Kache Dhage, and above all Hanste Zakham. 1974 was the year without king as Rajesh at 2 for Aap ki Kasam, number 3 for Roti, and another good movie Ajnabi. Dharmendra had Dost at 5 ,Resham ki Dori and Pocketmaar Amitabh had only at number 7 with Majboor along with Kasauti and Benaam. The ultimate number one was Roti Kapda Aur Maakaan which paved the way for Amitabh but solo hero movies still had Dharmendra .Some other hits were Dulhan (Jeetendra),Amir Garib (Devanand ),kunwara baap ( mahmood ),Geeta Mera naam (Sunil Dutt ),Khote Sikkey, Haath ki Safai, Rajnigandha,Chor Machay Shor,Chownkidaar etc 1975 overpowered Superstar Rajesh Khanna having only Aakarman and Prem Kahani, new Megastar was born with Deewaar also had Farar but shared success with Dharmendra in Sholay and Chupke Chupke but Dharmendra had upper hand in both movies and also had a diamond jubilee Pratiggya plus good Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka .Other hits had different genres and actors as Jai Santoshi Maa at number 3,Sanyasi at number 4,Chori Mera Kaam at number 7,Juile,Dharmatma, Aandhi, warrant,Bullet, Geet Gaata Chal. In 1976 Rajesh Khanna had Bundbaaz & Mehbooba but Dharmendra and Amitabh seen fighting for number one position, see the difference Amitabh had multistarrer hits like Kabhi Kabhie and Herapheri along with a solo Do Anjane And Dharmendra had all three solo hits Charas, Maa and Barood. Other hits of the year were Laila Majnu,Dus numbri ,Bairaag,Jaaneman, Fakira,Kalicharan, and Balikavadhu.
1977 saw Rajesh Khanna 's last hits at number 6 Ashiq Hoon Baharon Ka,Anurodh, Tyaag Palkon ki chhaon mein,Chhaila Babu,Jeetendra seen again in Apnapan
Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan both had multistarrer hits while some other movies without stars were also hit . Amitabh had highest-grosser Amar Akbar Anthony,Parvarish,Khoon Pasina and Imaan- Dharm but Dharmendra ' s multistarers were almost had the half budget but were hit like Amitabh 's movies. Chacha Bhatija was ranked number 2,evergreen Dharam veer(unfortunately lost money) and Khel Khiladi ka. OTHER HITS were Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Mann Bhaiye ,Paapi,Aadmi Sadak Ka,and Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin. 1978 saw the charishma of Raj Kapoor -TheDirector by topping with Satyam Shivam Sundaram .Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki ,Ankhion ke jharokon mein were other hits but this year Amitabh was numero-uno with Don, Muqqaddar Ka Sikander, Trishul,Kasme Wade, and Ganga Ki Saughandh all multistarer (pran was also a star in his own unique way)and again Dharmendra was solo He-man credited for success of the movies like Phandebaaz, Dillagai, Shalimaar and Azad. 1979 was the year of Bachchan with his star team as a captain for Suhag at number 1,Mr Natwarlal at 4,Kala Pather at 5,and The Great Gambler. Dharmendra was only on number 6 with Kartavya and had a lukewarm hit Dil ka Heera, this was again had the other multistarer movie Jaani Dushman at 2nd, Sargam at 3rd, Noorie at 7th, Dada ,Janta Hawaldaar,Nauker. 1980 had seen both the Megastar and Polestar equally good, Ram Balram had both of them, while Dharmendra had hit like The Burning Train and Alibaba 40 Chor on one hand and Amitabh on the other hand had Dostana Shaan and Do aur Do Paanch (declared flop)but Jeetendra gave good fight with more hits than the two having Asha,Aap ke Diwane, Jyoti Baney Jawala and Judai in lesser budgets. Other hits were having a variety of stars and stories with top scorer Qurbani, Karz,Insaaf ka Tarazu, Geet Gaata Chal, and Lootmaar. In 1981 Ek Duje Ke Liye, Love Story and Kranti were toppers, Rajesh Khanna endorsed his presence with Dard,Fifty Fifty and Kudrat, Jeetendra had Ek Hi Bhool and Meri Awaz Suno but competition for number one was again between Polestar and Megastar. Bachchan had hits like Lawaris,Kalia,Silsala and Naseeb.Dharam had hits like Krodhi, Proffer Pyare Lal and Katilon Ke Katil. Looks like Amitabh starers made more money but fact is that they were more expensive productions with more star-studding than Dharmendra ' s movies. Try to understand that Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra and Dharmendra had more Solo-star hits but Amitabh had a few. Amitabh Bachchan was excellent in multistarers as a captain.
Golden -Era was nearing it's end from 1982 onward for at least 10-15 years and movies were re-vitalized by new youngstars. Eventhough 82 to 90 had some medium glittering stars as a few for example Mithun Chakraborty, Govida,Rishi Kapoor, Raj Babbar,Vinod Khanna,Vinod Mehra,Sanjeev Kumar and two old players with second innings -Sunil Dutt and Shashi Kapoor. 1982 had hits like Nikaah, Prem Rog and Vidhata ,Rajesh Khanna had second leads in Dharam Kanta and Rajput sharing with Dharmendra who had again Half Dozen hits like Badle ki Aag,Baghawat, Ghazab,Samraat and Main Inteqaam Loonga .Amitabh had 8 hits ,Satte pe Satta, Suhaag,Khuddar,,Desh Premi, Namak Halal,Bemisaal and Shakti making him number one. 1983 had Amitabh upper hand with Coolie,Andha Kanoon,Mahaan,Nastik and Pukaar while Dharmendra had few releases with hits like Nauker Biwi Ka and Qyamat while Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna had their share in annual success with Arpan,Himmatwala, Justice Chowdhary,Mawali of Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna had some hits again with Avtaar,Sautan,Agar tum na hote also Nishan sharing with Jeetu. There were new starrer hits like Betaab and Hero along with Jaani Dost, and Ardh Satya. 1984 Dharmendra had Jagir,Jeene Nahin Doonga,Jhutha Sach and Raaj tilak while Amitabh had two superhit Sharabi and Inqulaab. Aaj ka MLA ,Awaz and Maqsad by Kaka and Tohfa by Jeetu. 1985 had seen Rajesh Khanna with Akhir Kyon ,Alag Alag and Thodi si Bewafai,Amitabh had Mard,Akhri Rasta and Greftaar while Dharmendra had super hit Ghulami Sultanat, other hits were Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Saagar . 1986 had hits like Karma,Naam and Mr India. In 1987 there was one and only one Dharmendra with Hakumat,AAG HI AAG,Insaniyat ke dushman,Jaan Hatheli Pe,LOHA,Watan ke rakhwale along with Insaaf kaun karega,Insaaf ki pukar, mera Karam mera dharm type of movies .Neither superstar nor Megastar was there in1987. 1988 had Quamat se Quamat tak and Tezab as top grossers but Amitabh with Shehanshah and Ganga Yamana Saraswati And Dharmendra with Zalzala and Ganga tere desh mein were not the kings of Bollywood. In 1989 and 1990 Dharmendra had no significant movies while Amitabh had some average movies like Toofaan,Main Azad Hoon and Aaj ka Arjun and a hit Agneepath in 1990. Amitabh was struggling again for ABCL losses till the inception of KBC and Rajesh Khanna was retired, Dharam was busy to establish sons and produced movies like Betaab,Barsaat,Dill-lagi,Apne ,Yamla Pagla Deewana and YPD -2.in next 26 years from 1989 till today. He had proved that he had his presence for more than 60 years in film - industry which is more than evergreen Devanand and Shashi Kapoor. More hits than any other stars in 100 years as a Solo-star. The best thing of his career he had only 5% flops and 95% producers made money and one strange thing is there Saira Banu and Dharmendra was a good pair but only Jwar Bhatta succeeded while there were many flops like Saazish,International Crook,Pocketmaar,Chaitaali and even Aadmi aur Insaan incurred losses. He was physically fit hero ,liked by all generations from dada to pota.A kind humble gentleman, good urdu poet ,soft-spoken and shy. This was his shyness that he avoided press and never managed or mal practised for self praise .He never chased numbers game of stardom and avoided trade politics.Though he is known as Garam - Dharam but he was never offensive and angry if somebody tried to irritate him than he is Garam Dharam, it was a period when he was a heavy drinker, extra-marital relationships was his destiny. Overall best soul in bollywood, public made him Polestar but we know for awards one have to involve with the so called authorities and he is not born to manupulate things for self-praise and publicity. Work is worship is his motto and we are still waiting his Yaadon Ki Barat type character as an angry-old-man .
