The content you removed has been under much debate for several months and as such I have reverted your change. You stated in your edit summary that the information was redundant, but if you read WP:LEAD, you'll see that the intro should be able to stand alone as an overview of the article's subject. As such, the introduction will of course cover the same information that the article does. This paragraph(s) should even "briefly describe its notable controversies".
