BBI content edit

Hi there, I noticed you've added some interesting material to a few pages on my watchlist. Regarding your "granting of permission" on behalf of a copyright holder, you should know that it is not possible to grant access to Wikipedia only. All content in WP is distributed according to GFDL, so that means all contributed content needs to be consistent with this license. (You can also see the link at the bottom of the page for more info on GFDL.) Also, since the BBI is a commercial site and you (apparently) are an employee, you should also have a look at WP:LINKSPAM and the links therein. Cheers, AndrewGNF (talk) 00:31, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I added the note that the text was copied with permission of BBI just to make sure someone didn't worry about plagiarism. It's not plagiarism that is problematic so much as it is compliance with the license. GFDL allows anyone to "copy and distribute the Document in any medium, either commercially or noncommercially" (see GFDL#Commercial_redistribution), which I think is incompatible with the "All rights reserved" notice on the BBI web site. So, if a user takes your content from WP and posts it to their web site (as allowed by GFDL), then they are in violation of the copyright claimed on the BBI website. Anyway, bottom line, it is not possible to grant permission to WP only, since WP only allows content which is consistent with GFDL. Make sense? Cheers, AndrewGNF (talk) 15:20, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

If you wish to add this material to Wikipedia, you will have to change the copyright statement on the website you are copying it from to release this material to the public domain, or release it under the GFDL licence. Since we have no way of verifying your identity, you cannot simply tell us that you have spoken to somebody in the organization and they said it was OK. This policy is explained in detail at Wikipedia:Copyrights. Tim Vickers (talk) 17:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC) But that's the thing; I'm not saying that I spoke to someone and it's okay. I am the person who says that it's okay. I'm not going to change the (oy, obviously horribly out of date) copyright notice on my corporate website to say "Everything from X to Y is okay for GFDL, but not this part." There are some options outlined here. You can e-mail me (Link) and I will send you a copy of a release to fill out. Tim Vickers (talk) 17:44, 21 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
