The Effects of Shifts in English-Persian Translation of Narrative Texts: The Case of 'Lord of the Flies'
Abstract
The present study examines a part of an English novel along with its two Persian translations with the goal of identifying different kinds of shifts which are applicable to the original in the process of translating English narrative texts into Persian and that how important each shift is. The model used in this research is that of Kitty Van Leuven-Zwart's (1984). This study verified the existence of twelve subcategories of shifts which are: semantic modification, explicitation, generalization, addition, deletion, mutation, category change, number change, passivization, depassivization, pronominalization, and depronominalization. The first six comprise semantic shifts, and the rest comprise grammatical shifts. Also, this study showed that semantic shifts are far more prevalent than grammatical shifts in the process of translating English narrative texts into Persian.
