August 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that the username you have chosen, "Party Booths", seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website. Please note that Wikipedia does not allow usernames that are promotional or appear to be shared by multiple people. Please take a moment to create a new account or request a username change that represents only yourself as an individual. You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and remember that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 04:24, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Request reason:

I own and operate Party Booths and my business played a vital roll in the history of "photo booth rental"s. I'm trying to edit the wiki page "photo booth rental" to reflect that as other businesses are listed here. My company was the first DIGITAL photo booth and began offering services at least one year prior to The Traveling Photo Booth (Check the date on which our websites were created to verify this statement) yet his name and website is on this wiki page. Why do I keep getting blocked when my business was the first to offer DIGITAL photo booths AND the first business to offer nationwide photo booth rentals. Your page is inaccurate and I am trying to make it accurate for you. Please explain what I need to do.

Decline reason:

Your choice of new name still reflects your company. As to why you are being 'blocked' - we say 'reverted' - you are not referencing to reliable independent sources. Your company site is not independent. It is not a source of information, but is a business site, which is what it's for. We want references to places like magazine articles, books and so on. No blogs, forums, Facebook & Co, LinkedIn etc, or wikis. Please keep the page order here when posting. I've moved this down to where we look for new things. It makes life much easier to have things in order. Peridon (talk) 17:52, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
Basically, you may KNOW that you were the first, but we cannot accept that without independent evidence. No offence intended to you. We have seen so many claims made that could not be backed up (some being totally ridiculous and others fairly convincing) that we do not accept any. Peridon (talk) 17:55, 11 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok this makes much more sense to me now. A big thanks for the detailed explanation! Please unblock me.

Your proposed username is acceptable, (actually your previous proposal was OK too), but it is not clear that you understand that you were blocked from promotional activity. Please review Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. If you accept that you will not be allowed to promote or publicize your company in any way on Wikipedia, how exactly do you plan to contribute here? If your intent only to generate publicity for your company, I see no reason to unblock this account. ~Amatulić (talk) 14:35, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

As I said, I understand where you are coming from with that detailed explanation from a few posts ago. It makes sense to me now and I will not "market" my biz here as a result. I get it. I am a huge blogger, reviewer, writer of articles, etc on the web and would like to at least have my own personal page on Wiki completed. I may also contribute to other pages not related to my business, etc in the future. Please unblock me and I will NOT mention my biz on any page related to photo booths. Thank You. :)

Decline reason:

It seems you don't actually know where we're coming from. This is not Facebook, we don't do personal pages, we don't accept "I may also contribute to other pages". Allow me to make it very clear what the requirements for this account being unblocked are. A) You will change your username to something neutral. B) you will agree that you will not directly edit about yourself, your company or anything with which you have a conflict of interest, i.e. you can request edits, you can request an article, you cannot write it in the article space yourself. C) You demonstrate that you understand that we want editors who are here for the benefit of improving the project, not pursuing their own aims, if you have no interest in writing if its not about you, then Wikipedia is not the place for you, you need to show how you intend to help if you have any intention of doing so Jac16888 Talk 18:45, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

I will NOT market my biz or benefit personally from my writings here in any way. I understand that now. I only went back to that PBDonald user name because another guy who blocked me had said it was ok. I don't care what my username is actually. I would like to be unblocked though because I will end up contributing to the project in the long run. In other news though, I do have just 2 questions: 1) How did those other businesses get mentioned on wiki? You are alleging that someone not related to "The traveling photo booth" for example made the edit and linked to his website. My guess is they simply had it done themselves by choosing a username not related to the business or added it via a friends account. 2) I know this is not FB but check out this link: User:Amatulic This guy essentially has a bio written about himself on his page and he is one of the guys who blocked me. Since that is not aloud, I won't do it but was curious to hear a response about why he can do it.;)

Accept reason:

Allowing username change to requested username. Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Daniel Case (talk) 21:52, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please put new stuff at the bottom of a talk page, to maintain chronology.

Actually, I didn't block you. I declined your request to unblock. Many editors write a few things about themselves and their Wikipedia-related interests. However, you will note that nothing on my user page is personally identifiable, or promotional. I don't mention my family business, my LinkedIn profile, my Facebook page, the web sites I have created, etc., because none of that is really appropriate here. If you want your user page to state a few things about you personally, that's fine, as long as you aren't here to promote your business.

As to other businesses getting mentioned: If they are not notable, they should be removed. There are millions of articles here, only a few thousand active editors, and only a few hundred active administrators, so we can't monitor everything and correct every problem. I just went through the article and removed some inappropriate links, which you should have done rather than simply add your own. ~Amatulić (talk) 20:57, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh, one other thing: In your first unblock request you mentioned that your company offered the first digital photo booth. That's a claim of notability deserving of a mention in the article, but Wikipedia would need a link to a reliable, independent, secondary source that confirms this. Primary sources such as the company web site or press releases aren't sufficient. ~Amatulić (talk) 21:05, 13 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok yeah that makes total sense. No worries, I won't be doing anything on here that benefits me in any way. Thanks for removing some of those other links. I would have done that myself but at the time of my first edit, I wasn't really sure of all the rules, etc. I am now though. ;) Thanks! (Party Booths (talk) 21:10, 13 August 2012 (UTC)) Oops, still request to have my username changed to dman517 please. (Party Booths (talk) 21:12, 13 August 2012 (UTC))Reply
