Hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia. We have an active community of chemists, found at WT:CHEMISTRY and WT:CHEMICALS. You might like to pop by and say hello? Are you an official representative of Org. Synth.? I'm wondering, because Org. Synth. is a popular source for many articles, and there are ways we might be able to cooperate. You can leave your reply here (preferably), or you can contact me at User talk:Rifleman_82 as well. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 20:50, 2 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I'm the assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of Organic Syntheses and am new to editing on Wikipedia. I appreciate you reaching out, as I may have questions regarding etiquette or other issues when contributing to Wikipedia. We will probably be updating the Org. Synth. entry sometime soon, and possibly adding a link here and there to Wiki entries where it would be appropriate and informative.--OrgSyn (talk) 17:05, 3 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

That's good to hear. I am concerned about your username's compliance with regard to the Wikipedia:Username policy. The gist is, usernames which suggest a single account being shared by multiple users in an organization are frowned upon. If you could think of an alternative username, I'll try to help you make the transition.

That aside, it is good practice to say a little about yourself in your user page: User:OrgSyn. By that, I mean that you should disclose your affiliation if it affects your edits here in any way. For example, see User:Smokefoot's userpage. Being upfront about it helps avoid misunderstandings.

If you need any help, please feel free to drop me a message at my user talk. Typically people have very cluttered watchlists, so unless we are having an active conversation, I might not check your usertalk for messages for me.

Once again, I would invite you to drop by WT:CHEMISTRY and WT:CHEMICALS to say hi. We've been working with your material for quite a while, and many would be interested in your Wikipedia presence. I am, at least.

If you notice, Org. Synth. is heavily referenced in Wikipedia. I was wondering if you could make citing Org. Synth simpler. Just throwing out ideas for now: This is a typical citation:

^ Schleyer, P. von R.; Donaldson, M. M.; Nicholas, R. D.; Cupas, C. (1973), "Adamantane", Org. Synth., Coll. Vol. 5: 16.

The markup is thus:

<ref>{{OrgSynth|author = Schleyer, P. von R.; Donaldson, M. M.; Nicholas, R. D.; Cupas, C.|title = Adamantane|collvol = 5|collvolpages = 16|year = 1973|prep = cv5p0016}}</ref>

I notice some redundancy between collvol = 5 | collvolpages = 16 and prep = cv5p0016. I imagine it would be convenient to simply enter prep = cv5p0016 and have the rest of the data populated. I notice that recent collected volumes (#10 and on) no longer use "cv" on your websites... I have to run, but I was hoping I could leave you with something to think about. Perhaps we can find a way to make it easier to cite Org. Synth. Typing with pipes and equal signs is afterall, very unnatural. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 17:28, 3 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I was just citing Org Syn in the acetylene article when someone mentioned you had showed up! There is a nice template, {{OrgSynth}}, we use for citing Org Syn, and its use is mentioned here. This does make citations much easier. Let us know if we can help you. Walkerma (talk) 03:50, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have created a new username which hopefully complies more closely to the Wikipedia guidelines, as this username should represent only myself and not that of the entire Organic Syntheses organization. You can find my new talk page here: OrgSynAssistant (talk) 22:13, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
