Pan Focus

Hi Opello! You wrote a message to Lilac Soul about Panfocus (Sorry, I don't know about the original article to which you were referring in that message). Panfocus is a trade name for the way certain closed circuit video manufacturers set the focus on their products. You see, when a lens is focused on an object, only objects at that distance are in "critical focus" but for each aperture setting at that distance there is a range of distances deemed acceptably in focus and this range is called "depth of field". The widest aperture (i.e. the setting with the lowest f-stop number) has the shallowest depth of field; only a narrow band of distances are acceptably in focus. You can set the focus so that the furthest distance acceptably in focus is infinity (By the way, at this setting the distance in critical focus is called the "hyperfocal distance"). What Panfocus is is the manufacturer fixes the focus of their lens at the hyperfocal distance for the widest aperture of that lens. Sorry if this is too much info. • If anyone sees this, and cares enough to have the box art be added to Wikipedia, please let me know what rationale I need to use. I tried to figure it out but was obviously unsuccessful. For what it's worth, this is the original Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 box art, which depicted a plane dropping paratroopers, but due to the layering could have been viewed as careening toward the World Trade Center towers. While I'm all for respecting the memory of the day and those that died, I thought (as did the talk page for the game) that the addition was worthwhile. -opello (talk) 04:53, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
