Yilkari

Yilkari is an aboriginal word native to the pinjatjarra. Roughly translated it means 'blue skies' however the aboriginal language is an emotional one so. Picture a day when the sun is warm, the sky is blue, the birds are singing and it feels good to be alive. What you feel picturing this is what the word means.

In the early seventies John and Susan Oliver leased land east of Leonora (Western Australia) as market gardens and water rights. There they grew a citrus orchard and general market garden supplying local demand. In 1988 they divorced and the property remained with Susan who continued to be a well known philanthropist in the region. The gardens however suffered and subsequently the property was sold in 2009 In the 00s the shire of Kalgoorlie opted to name a newly proposed subdivision after the property and as such a suburb to the south west of Kalgoorlie is named. In approximately 2013 the son of the original owners restarted the business name and presently operates a mechanical business within the Kalgoorlie surrounds.
