Talk:Spider-Man

edit

What you are doing is taking information presented only in an encyclopedic source (OTHMU) and using it in another encyclopedia. That's copyright infringement. Yanking this information would not be stepping on toes or giving anyone a hard time, as these articles don't belong to anyone, it would be keeping Wikipedia in its domain. If this information were given in primary sources (i.e. the comic books themselves, which won't happen) then we could use it, but since it is in a secondary source that has the same use as Wikipedia (though in a different medium), it is against copyright.
By the way you can sign articles with a timestamp by just typing four contiguous "~"s at the end of your post. Psyphics 15:42, 10 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

OHOTMU stats

edit

I notice that you keep adding stats after they've been deleted. You know as well as I do that it's against Wikipedia policy to use handbook stats. I've fought to have them included in the past. However, it's majority rules. So c'mon, please stop adding the stats. Odin's Beard 22:17, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is starting to get ridiculous

edit

Why do you keep adding OHOTMU stats to other articles and why do you insist on constantly advertising those websites right in the middle of the Spider-Man's powers and equpment article? The article isn't of the highest quality, granted, but that's not any sort of an improvement. The same websites are in the external links section. It's redundant to stick them right in the middle of another section. Aside from that, the information provided in those sites is severely outdated. They were taken from the OHOTMU Master's Edition that came out in the early 90's. Odin's Beard 00:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nice try. However, in order to be included in the Marvel.com bio, which can be edited by anyone, the stat would still have to be taken out of the OHOTMU, which still violates Wikipedia policy. I'm not sure if the updated handbooks say that he can lift 15 tons. If they don't, then stating that he can in the article is speculation. The only way you're going to be able to get around policy is if a regular monthly, canon, issue of a comic book tells how much weight Spider-Man can lift over his head. The only problem is that the stats you insist upon using are taken directly from the OHOTMU and aren't found in any other Marvel publication. They're unique in that fashion. These articles can be interpreted by Marvel as an alternative to using the OHOTMU and by using something so specific as those strength stats, taken directly from the OHOTMU, Marvel Comics could potentially seek legal action if they had a mind to. All of the other information in the articles is far more generalized, pieced together from various comic books published over the decades.

Now, would Marvel seek legal action, I highly doubt it. After all, the bios and information on Marvel Directory.com are copied word for word out of older versions of the OHOTMU. However, I can't say for a certainty that Marvel wouldn't seek legal action, nor can you or anyone else that contributes to Wikipedia.

As a reporter, I'm guessing that your place of employment has certain policies and standards that you either adhere to or you hit the road, pretty much like any other place of employment. The same could be said in this situation. If you don't agree with the policy, you don't have to contribute. Or, you could always try to get the policy changed. I doubt you'll have any more luck than I've had in the past, but who knows.Odin's Beard 14:43, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
