Nice to see you around here! --Richard McCoy (talk) 01:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome Richard! I finally got permission to use the image of this sculpture we photographed and examined so thought I would join WSPA, even if it was only to create a stub. =) NessyM (talk) 23:13, 19 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Cool! The image looks good, but in order to claim the free use of it, it has to be used for an article or it will get deleted. That's why that person has put the message below. --Richard McCoy (talk) 12:05, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm so glad that you are keeping an eye on this. I just didn't get to actually inserting the image yesterday but will do that now!
Yes, but you have to move into a real article in order for the image not to be orphaned ... Wikipedians are sticklers for copyright rules. You can probably make that page "live" now. Just classify it as a "stub." --Richard McCoy (talk) 18:24, 21 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oops, I dropped the ball on the image and missed your message here about making it live. I guess I don't have the hang of this just yet. I am still a bit confused about the use of images. If the artist's estate and the museum allowed me to use the image on Wikipedia, is it still considered a non-free image? I tried to read a bit about the images but it was a bit too much to take in on a first read and think I need to go over it again a couple of times.
I also wondered if there was a rule about the image you use for an artwork. For some reason I feel like I read that for artwork the image has to be straight on? And I wonder if there can be a Colorchecker card in it off to the side of the image? NessyM (talk) 00:36, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Stephanie_Spy_foot_corrosion.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Stephanie_Spy_foot_corrosion.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 06:19, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm new to wikipedia and trying to grapple with all the information regarding images. Can I use one of these images on a Discussion page where I am using it to illustrate a point I'm making? NessyM (talk) 23:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Stephanie and Spy.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading File:Stephanie and Spy.JPG. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 22:08, 25 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
