Regarding your question about how bitcoin originated, the description was that bitcoins could be mined and I can see that explained in the article, but mining would only slowly increase the bitcoin supply from '0' until a 'critical mass' was reached at some point. I was wondering (as you were, I think) how the bitcoin supply got through the initial phase. Governments just fiat the money into existence but the bitcoin creators couldn't do that.
