Netball edit

Hello. Thanks for the comment on my talk page. I'm not that familiar with the rules of netball. (I'm more of a sport historian than person who knows the rules, and I've never actually played the game.) I've asked the other major contributor to the article to help do that and I've left a message on Talk:Netball requesting assistance in dealing with that issue. Beyond that, please be bold and make an edit to make the objective more clear. :) --LauraHale (talk) 23:15, 2 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mrs muffet, and welcome to Wikipedia. As confusing as it might seem, in netball you actually do score goals by shooting the ball into the opposing team's goal. I've tried to explain this at Talk:Netball. I've restored the original wording for now, but following your query we'll probably end up rewording it to make it less confusing. Feel free to leave suggestions here. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 07:34, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Netball (Geometry guy's comments) edit

Hi Geometry guy,

I am the person who wrote to Laura Hale regarding the description of the Objective of Netball in the article entitled "Netball" in the Wikipedia. I noticed that you replied to Laura's request for assistance with defining the objective of the game.

Laura informed me that she was unsure of the mechanics of the game herself and that she had asked for assistance following up the issue. She also suggested that I edit the article myself. I presume that you are involved with editing the article on netball since you replied to Laura. I would like to inform you that I have now edited the article myself. The changes are as follows: Previously written: “The object of the game is for teams to score goals, by passing a ball and shooting it into the opposing team's goal.” My edit: “The object of the game is for teams to score goals, by passing a ball and shooting it into their team's goal ring.”

Notwithstanding your comments, from my perspective the only real issue here is which goal is the team's goal? The goal that the team shoots into or the goal that they are defending. Accordingly, which of the above statements is correct, the 'previously written' one or 'my edit'? If you yourself do not know the answer to this question, I refer you to www.netballonline.com. On their page entitled "Basic Rules of the Game", under the heading "Playing the Game" they write " Centre passes are taken alternately by the Centre of each team, after each goal is scored and at the start of each quarter. Each team endeavours to pass the ball (to) down to their goal circle and score goals. The team with the most goals at the end of the playing time wins the game. " If you do not consider this global organisation of netball fans a definitive enough source to settle the issue (which I can appreciate), at the very least it serves to demonstrate that I am not the only person who thinks that a netball team's goal is the goal through which they shoot. I suggest that the issue needs to be clarified, especially if Netball is to be accepted an olympic sport.

I certainly do not claim to be an expert on netball, not having played the game myself for some thirty years. That is why I did not wish to edit the article myself without consultation. I hope that you or someone else concerned with editing the article will clarify the issue and make changes to my edit if necessary.

Thank you for your consideration.

Regards,

Cathy Mrs muffet (talk) 06:29, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments and contributions. It is best to discuss the article on the article discussion/talk page so I will continue there. You need not worry about editing the article: this is a wiki and all mistakes can be fixed, so editors are encouraged to be bold. All versions of an article are kept in its edit history, which can be found using the tab "View history". This also makes it easy to see what changes have been made. Consequently, you don't need to explain in detail every edit. Geometry guy 16:10, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
PS. I am watchlisting this page, so you can reply here if you wish.

Thank you for your research on the definition of "a team's goal" in netball. I am replying here because I had trouble editing on the Netball discussion page. I did manage to leave a comment there re restoring my edit on "Netball". I emailed Netball Australia regarding the issue in the hope that they would provide some clarity, but I haven't heard from them yet. Mrs muffet (talk) 15:18, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Glad to help. I look forward to hearing what Netball Australia have to say. Do keep contributing! Geometry guy 22:46, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
