Independent minyanim edit
Dear Moriarty00, I appreciate your updates re the page I started, Independent Minyan -- and it's obvious to me you have some good knowledge (and probably experience) about and with these minyanim. So, when I ask a question about your change to the "starting dates" for these minyans, please understand I am seriously asking out of an interest in learning, NOT as a challenge! The reason I put late 1990s and after 2000 as dates for the beginning of the minyanim that are part of the "independent minyan movement/phenomenon" was Rabbi Kaunfer's three-fold definition, which included the requirement that the minyan had started "within the last ten years" (of his presentation). Why would he not consider the minyan you added as a reference not an "independent minyan"? Or is he just saying there may have been a minyan here or there that was independent and egalitarian, but it was not part of this new "movement" or "phenomenon" unless it started more recently? - Thanks for asking. I don't see Rabbi Kaunfer's definition as canonical, and I agree with those who take issue with the 10-year piece in particular. See, for example, http://mahrabu.blogspot.com/2010/03/independent-minyanim-book.html, the two paragraphs beginning "Jumping off from Hadar". I'm new to Wikipedia, but I believe that as a neutral point of view we should let communities define themselves, and Newton Centre Minyan is described as "unaffiliated" and meets Elie's other criteria. - Thanks!! I agree with you, and was just curious why he would include a "no later than" date in terms of start-up as a criterion! Anyway, I appreciate your help, and I'm glad that the two pages I started about independent minyanim (Independent minyan, and DC minyan) seem to be attracting some interest -- including some corrections! :) Assuming you are Jewish (!), I will wish you a Shabbat Shalom! - The "why" might be in order to cement Hadar's place in history, to make it the genesis of a phenomenon rather than merely a tipping point. But IMO Hadar's place is strong enough already (as a tipping point in the phenomenon as a whole, and as the innovator of a number of particular aspects) and needs no reinforcement. 98.214.63.101 Mahrabu (talk) 15:51, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
