Fernschachmeister writes: some months ago after the publication of Tim Harding's comprehensive biography of Blackburne, I made several edits to what was then the Wikipedia article on Blackburne. Others have since added other items and changed some to make the article less accurate than it was when I left it. For example, somebody added something on the basis of Schoneberg's awful book and I'm glad to see it now removed; that 1876 Blackburne-Steinitz match was never considered an unofficial world championship match. I also see that Bill Wall's comment on the "Blackburne shilling gambit" has been relegated to a footnote. I had left that unaltered because although I generally consider Bill Wall an unreliable source, in this case I believe he was right; the "shilling gambit" seems to be oral tradition but Harding did not put it in his book because documentary proof that Blackburne played it is lacking. Documentation about Blackburne and alcohol may be found in the Harding biography but I did not make changes in that area.
