Welcome!

edit

Hello, MichaelEBU, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was European Buddhist Union, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or any other editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! Hallo Michael, I have noted some problems associated with the use of external links in the EBU article.

  • "External links should not normally be used in the body of an article." WP:ELPOINTS

Please change the external links in the body of the article into wikilinks (like European Union) or into citations.

Best regards JimRenge (talk) 13:13, 28 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Please do not add or change content, as you did to European Buddhist Union, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. JimRenge (talk) 11:19, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Feedback

edit

Thanks for your feedback Jim. I'm learning slowly to get familiar with the wikipedia format. would you mind to adjust the German version in a similar way. There is dated (and even wrong) information on it. Another editor bluntly threatened to block if any changes were made, which is not really acting in a spirit of scientific dialogue I must say. Thanks again for your guidance. All the best, --MichaelEBU (talk) 15:36, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

It takes some time to get accustomed to wikipedia's policies and guidelines. That's no problem if you are here to help building an encyclopedia and willing to respect the rules (representing the consensus of the community).
Recently there had been an article for deletion debate regarding the EBU article on the German Wikipedia. The deletion could only be avoided by establishing the notability of the EBU - by verifying content with 3rd party reliable sources. Your edits removed these reliable sources and the content added, appeared to violate several policies and guidelines. Your user name, the re-revert and its edit summary may have provoked the reverting editor.
If you can tell me what info is wrong in the German version, I can correct it - just provide a reliable source (WP:RS). It is possible to cite the EBU webpage if you don't overdo it, but the info should be published. EBU mission statement/"Angenommen von der MV der EBU, September 2013"; was this published in print or on the EBU website? If not, it may be possible to add a scan of a EBU document to wikisource and cite that.

Thanks Jim,

I tried to change my username but couldn't work out how (the username was a decision on the spot and I didn't think it through at the time. I'm on wikipedia as a trained philosopher and religious scientist, not as an EBU representative). Sorry if it triggered any paranoia.

I also had no intention of violating any rules, only keeping info up to date. There are so many guidelines around for wikipedia that it is easy to miss things out if you're a new user.

FYI: the 'official EBU website' referred to on the German site is no longer updated and will be taken of line shortly, that's why I removed it. There will be a new website for EBU which should have gone on line in November, I presume it will be functional before Xmas. The info you refer to (and also the speech from Stephen Batchelor I made a reference to) will be there. I will add the link to the new website once it is on line (if your friendly colleague doesn't crucify me). EBU is not with UNESCO by the way and the references to the AGM's are ad hoc (there are AGMs every year obviously) and don't add any useful information, so I see no point in adding that to the article.

Thanks for you patience with me :-) --MichaelEBU (talk) 19:32, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Removed UNESCO, not in source.  :) JimRenge (talk) 20:00, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
