Speedy deletion of Brandon jennings

edit

A tag has been placed on Brandon jennings requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. guyzero | talk 04:57, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note. The deletion of your contribution has nothing to do with the length of time you've been associated with Wikipedia; it has to do with whether or not the subject of the article meets the relevant guidelines. I've excerpted the relevant standard for you below (you can track down the full set under Wikipedia:Notable:

"Athletes:

  • Competitors who have played in a fully professional league, or a competition of equivalent standing in a non-league sport such as swimming or tennis
  • Competitors who have played or competed at the highest level in amateur sports (who meet the general criteria of secondary sources published about them)."

The second bullet point would refer generally to the Olympic level of sport for sports that are played in the Olympics, such as basketball. Note also the phrase about "secondary sources"; that would refer to articles in books, magazines, etc., which weren't cited in the article. (Wikipedia content must be verifiable.) I hope this explains things to your satisfaction; I recommend that you read the entire policy page, since an excerpt such as this can give misleading impressions. If you have any further questions about Wikipedia policies, you can leave another note on my talk page. Accounting4Taste:talk 05:22, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note. It is kind of a Catch-22, especially for brand-new editors. One of the major functions here on Wikipedia is called "new page patrol", and there are dozens of people who work daily to keep Wikipedia clear of new pages that don't meet our standards. As you can imagine, there is plenty of vandalism along the line of "Joe is a poo head" or "My school rocks!" and I think it's something like 75% of new pages that get deleted the same day they're created. Those pages include serious copyright violations and libellous "attack pages" which we must get rid of immediately. Unfortunately, pages like yours get caught up in this process. What I'm going to do is create a page for you that we call a "sandbox", where you can work on your page and get it ready before putting it into the system. No one will be looking at your sandbox page for a while (if the content hangs around for, say, a month, someone might check it out) and you can polish the article, add the citations, etc. The page will be found at User:Meowcicle/Sandbox. If you have any questions or problems, I'm at your service. Accounting4Taste:talk 16:20, 4 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Because I created User:Meowcicle/Sandbox, it pops up in my watchlist and thus I noticed that you've been working on the article. If I may offer a word of advice -- in the section you've called "Media attention", you need to offer more information about exactly where these publications said these things. For instance, a link to the exact page of SI.com would be appropriate; a citation for the exact page of a specific issue of a magazine that you've quoted would be helpful. This falls under the policy of verifiability. I hope this helps you; it seems as though the article is presently close to notability (I'm not enough of a sports expert to tell one way or the other) and I'd like to help you bolster it if I can. If you need help in formatting the citations, I'm at your service. Accounting4Taste:talk 05:02, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Brandon Jennings

I have nominated Brandon Jennings, an article you created, for deletion. Contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated. However, I do not feel that Brandon Jennings satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and I have explain why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the open discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Brandon Jennings and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Brandon Jennings during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion.
