Design edit

Hi.. IMO, it's seems the template is based on infobox military unit. I'd prefer to have it based on infobox law enforcement agency, so there is no significant difference between agency page and unit page. And I'd propose to replace |specialty1= on infobox law enforcement agency into |role= and makes it "optional". Ckfasdf (talk) 01:19, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Ckfasdf: If you view the infobox documentation subpage it has a full size empty example. I copied the colour scheme of the Military History WikiProject Template:WPMILHIST Infobox style from military unit (MU) for the header style and the subheader style this applies to Unit name, native name, Commanders, etc.. I thought these colours may not be favored. The colours can be changed Wikipedia:Infobox colours - law enforcement agency (LEA) uses #efefef for header but has no subheader. I also copied the image style from MU so if the infobox has a image such as a logo or patch it displays a line below it. Instead of a line, I was considering a new header titled "Unit overview" similar to LEA "Agency overview". I don't know how to code so that if there is a image the Unit overview header displays otherwise doesn't as there would be too many headers - Unit name, native name, Unit overview.

The infobox parameters:

  • |Unit overview header= not in design. It could be included, preferably coded so that it displays only if there is a image otherwise it doesn't appear. Present design uses MU line.
  • |Active= from MU. LEA equivalent is |Formed=.
  • |Country= same as MU and LEA. MU can be re-labelled as |Countries=.
  • |Agency= from LEA. MU equivalent is |Branch= which is a military term or |Allegiance=.
  • |Operations jurisdiction= from LEA if a unit does not operate throughout a whole country. No equivalent in MU.
  • |Type= from MU which is free form. LEA equivalent is |Jurisdictional structure= National/Federal/International agency; |General nature= Corrections, Probation, Regulation, Intelligence, Federal law enforcement, Military provost, Gendarmerie, Local civilian police, Civilian police, Secret police, Religious police.
  • |Role= from MU which is free form. LEA uses the codified Template:Specialist lea type descr. This does not contemplate that each unit has differing roles as a consequence a reader is given incorrect information.
  • |Sworn type=; |Unsworn type= from LEA with the label able to be customised. MU equivalent is |Size=.
  • |Part of= from MU. LEA equivalent is |Parent agency=.
  • |Headquarters= from LEA. MU equivalent is |Garrison= with a customised label |garrison_label= that defaults to Garrison/HQ.
  • |Motto= same as MU and LEA.
  • |Common name= from LEA. MU equivalent is |Nickname(s)=.
  • |Acronym= used Acronym instead of Abbreviation in LEA. MU equivalent is |identification_symbol= with customised label that is commonly labelled as Abbreviation.
  • |Commanders header= from MU. No equivalent in LEA.
  • |Current commander= from MU. LEA equivalent is |Agency executives=.
  • |Notable commanders= from MU. LEA equivalent is |Person=/|People=.
  • |Notables header= from LEA. No equivalent in MU.
  • |Program(s)= from LEA in free form. LEA has a list format with max entries 6. No MU equivalent.
  • |Significant operation(s)= from LEA in free form. LEA has a list format with max entries 6. MU equivalent is |Engagements=.
  • |Anniversaries= same as MU and LEA.
  • |Awards= from LEA in free form. LEA has a list format with max entries 6. MU equivalent is |Decorations= and |Battle Honors=.
  • |Facilities header= from LEA. No equivalent in MU.
  • |{{{station_type}}}s= from LEA. No equivalent in MU.
  • |Equipment header= No equivalent in LEA with equipment parameters part of Facilities header.
  • |Vehicles= from LEA in free form. LEA has three parameters with labels able to be customised. MU equivalent is |Equipment= or parameters part of |Aircraft flown header=.
  • |Boats= from LEA in free form. LEA has three parameters with labels able to be customised. MU equivalent is |Equipment= or parameters part of |Aircraft flown header=.
  • |Aircraft= from LEA in free form. LEA has three parameters with labels able to be customised. MU equivalent is |Aircraft flown header=.
  • |Animals= from LEA in free form. LEA has three parameters with labels able to be customised. MU equivalent is |Equipment= or parameters part of |Aircraft flown header=.
  • |Website header= from LEA. No equivalent in MU.
  • |Website= same as MU and LEA.

The design hasn't included:

  • from MU the parameter |Disbanded= or LEA equivalent |Dissolved= below the |Active= parameter.
  • |Mascot= from MU; |Patron= from MU.
  • from MU the country parameter can be re-labelled as |countries= and LEA has a |Multinational agency= parameter. The design at present isn't for a multi-national law enforcement unit. 46 of the 22160 MU articles use the countries parameter two examples are Multinational Force and Observers and Multinational Joint Task Force. In 2018, no LEA articles used Multinational agency.
  • from LEA the |Person=/|People= parameter for notable persons. At present, the design only has notable commanders similar to MU. This can be added as part of Notables header.

I'm not sure of a design for an editor who wants to provide details of sub-units as the MU has no equivalent design to LEA. At present, the design incorporates the |Facilities header= with |{{{station_type}}}s= from LEA. I was thinking this header could be renamed as Sub-unit(s) or similar with parameters of name and location for the sub-units. The LEA design has several parameters for sub-units: a |Child= parameter together with a non-customised label |Child agency=/|Child agencies=; |units= together with a customised |unittype= label parameter, |officename= together with a customised |officetype= label; |stations= together with a customised |stationtype= label. MU editors commonly use the |Garrison/HQ= parameter to list HQ and sub-unit locations (the design uses |Heaquarters= instead) and also use the |Size= parameter to list either number/types/names of sub-units which it isn't the design.--Melbguy05 (talk) 18:11, 20 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Ominae: Do you have any thoughts on the design? --Melbguy05 (talk) 03:34, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Frietjes: Are you able to cast your eye over my draft of a new infobox for a law enforcement unit please? It is the first infobox I have designed. I tried to use the colour scheme of Template:Infobox military unit but instead of using Template:WPMILHIST Infobox style I copied the code directly from it and applied it to the design. Not sure if that was a good idea. |native_name_lang= in the subheader not sure if that is correct. I copied dates from Infobox military unit with |start_date=, |end_date= and |dates=. thanks --Melbguy05 (talk) 02:53, 21 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
