Bioburden is a big deal in NASA missions for planetary protection reasons. See for example the minutes of meetings of the NAC Planetary Protection Subcommittee at http://science.nasa.gov/science-committee/subcommittees/nac-planetary-protection-subcommittee/ Perhaps you could add some more examples of bioburden testing in the pharmaceutical industry? For example, bioburden testing is also required per ICH Q5D DERIVATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF CELL SUBSTRATES USED FOR PRODUCTION OF BIOTECHNOLOGICAL/BIOLOGICAL PRODUCTS.
