Welcome

edit

Hello, Megabug7, and welcome to Wikipedia! I see that you are here because you want to work on and improve the article about your late father. I'm sorry for your loss. I will be glad to help you with the article - by adding references, for instance. Wikipedia has a lot of rules about what can be in the article, rules that you are probably not aware of. I will help you to make it a good Wikipedia article.

I have declined your request to protect the page. We only use protection as a way of stopping vandalism or other problem edits, and that has not been happening at that article. At this time his death does not appear to have been publicized, so no-one should be adding it to the article, because we only use material that has been published/verified by reliable sources. If anyone else adds it without adding a reference to verify it, you can feel free to remove it. However, if his death does get reported in print, we will have to add it and make other changes - change the article to past tense, for example - even if you are not ready yet with your version.

Before you post the "extended biography/obituary" you are planning, please read WP:COI and WP:NOTMEMORIAL. The article must be based on published sources, not your own experience and memory. It must not include flowery language or praise beyond what has been published. It must not include copy-paste of any material that has been published elsewhere, for copyright reasons. Please understand that you do not own the article; it will be edited by others to keep in line with Wikipedia guidelines. If you have questions about this you can ask me here; I will see it. -- MelanieN (talk) 21:01, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Melanie - thank you for all the information. My sister has updated the page but would like to upload a photo but we don't see how to do this Could you help us with this?

Thanks Megabug7 (talk) 10:43, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Uploading pictures (or as we call them, files) is complicated. It can be tricky because Wikipedia is very careful about copyrights; we generally can't use photos that have been published anywhere. It's best if the person uploading the photo took it themselves, so they can label it as "own work". They must release all rights to it.
For help doing this you could post a request here: Wikipedia:Files for upload. That area can take a while, there is a backlog. Alternatively you could upload it using Wikimedia Commons, an area related to Wikipedia where files are stored. Once you do that you can link to it from an article here. To use Commons, start here: [1] In either case, the result will be a image in the format [[File:Name you gave the file]]. Once you have created the file I can tell you how to insert it into the article. -- MelanieN (talk) 17:20, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Please tell your sister that she did an excellent job with the article. I have done a little light copy-editing. One thing that needs to be fixed is the link to Aalst; as you can see from that link, are three places in the Netherlands called Aalst; can you fix it to link to the correct one? Also, most biographies would include some information about his education. Many also include something about his family, particularly if there is a spouse or children, but this is not required. -- MelanieN (talk) 17:51, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Aalst has been fixed. Dennis' family/spouse/children is included in the obituary but I would need to find out if we should add it to the page.

We appreciate the changes you made :) Megabug7 (talk) 18:13, 27 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
