Alcoholism edit

Medical Man, I saw your edits to the Alcoholism article and looked at some of your edits in other alcohol related articles. You obviously have done some homework on the subject(s), feel free to help more with the Alcoholism article and the talk page as well. Cheers! Mr Christopher 02:08, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Medical Man. You keep stating that there is no proof that alcoholism is a disease. There's plenty of proof...what exactly would you like to see? There are twin studies, adoption studies, neurophysiologic studies, PET, SPECT, and other scans, and several hundred years of anecdotal descriptions of the disease with a standard course and symptom profile. I'm not sure what it would take to convince you, but the rest of the medical community is convinced. Drgitlow 02:22, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

This template is for notifying parties that a Request for Mediation has been filed with the Mediation Committee. The formatting is {{RFM-Request|Article that is the subject of the request|Name of the mediation case (from the RFM page).}}.

A request for mediation has been filed with the Mediation Committee in regard to the article {{{Alcoholism}}}. Mediation Committee procedure requires that all parties to a mediation be notified of the mediation, and indicate an agreement to mediate within fourteen days. Please review the request at [[Wikipedia:Requests for mediation#{{{Alcoholism}}}]], and indicate your agreement or refusal to mediate. If you are unfamiliar with mediation, please refer to Wikipedia:Mediation or contact a member of the Mediation Committee.

Asking for help at Wikipedia is not a simple task. One submission was already rejected due to poor formatting on my part. I'm not sure how well the second attempt will be received. If you know the Wikipedia help drill, feel free to edit my attempt here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_mediation#Alcoholism And I hope you don't mind I volunteered you as one of the mediation parties. Cheers! Mr Christopher 16:36, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Irony edit

Controversy is only dreaded by the advocates of error - Benjamin Rush

And at least you didn't mention the Father of our Country in all likelyhood died from the blood letting "treatment" Benjamin Rush advocated. Mr Christopher 19:00, 30 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it would have been awful to be a physician in the 1700's, wouldn't it? No antibiotics, no syringes; heck, they didn't even know about the importance of washing their hands. At least Dr. Rush was trying. He got some things right and some wrong - as we all do, no? Drgitlow 20:38, 3 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Awesome edit

You've done an awesome job on the alcoholism article. Sorry Ive been too busy to help out but you've made huge strides getting this thing more NPOV as well as making sure more voices are heard in the article. Nice. Mr Christopher 22:13, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Request for Comment on Dr Gitlow edit

Hi, Medical Man. I'm planning on reverting my RFC on DrGitlow on the condition that he joins me and the other interested parties in a non-wiki based forum where we can discuss our differences. I'd specifically like to invite you to join us. I'm setting up a space at the Intellectual Icebergs forum so that this might be accomplished. I seriously think that the linear format of wikis is non-condusive to this kind of argument.

I've added to your entry on the request for mediation, but I think that the RfC process needs to occur first. Robert Rapplean (aka Mythobeast) 01:03, 2 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey edit

IS there a reason you have not enabled email for your account? Mr Christopher 14:43, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alcoholism v3.0 edit

Hi MM, I'm really pleased that you seem agreeable to the compromise intro I proposed. If it gets good reviews from the others then we can continue to move forward. As you might have realized, I'm not an academic (despite my sig), but I'm looking forward to working on this article with editors who have such expertise on the topic. --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 04:56, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comments on my Talkpage, your support means a lot to me. I had reviewed the article's history before I got involved, so I think I understand the frustration you had been feeling. There really does seem to be a new spirit of cooperation between the editors now, and I'm hoping we can use that to build a better, stronger article. I think that your positive attitude and willingness to compromise will bring a lot to the project, just as your expertise does :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 15:55, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Really nice work! I made more extensive remarks at the Talkpage, but you really earned your butterfly today :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 04:06, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Glad you liked it; I gave one to each of you (MedMan, Dr G, Mr Chris, and Robert R) because I really felt you all deserved some recognition. And if we can get that article up to FAC, well then I'll start passing around Barnstars :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 15:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

And now with the incentive of a Barnstar, we'll be motivated to work even harder! You'd make a good supervisor or manager :-)Medical Man 15:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, it's really been a pleasure getting to know all of you and being able to work together. When I first "stepped in" to the article I was ready to get flamed and be sent running away with my tail between my legs. Instead, I was made to feel so welcome that it's now very natural to think of the work group as "our team". I hope you all continue to make progress in the week that I'll be on vacation, but not too much, I don't want to miss all the fun :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 16:11, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fillmore study edit

I've misplaced my copy of the Fillmore study (Addiction Research & Theory), the one that spoke of the prospective studies on longevity and moderate alcohol intake having a systematic error. Do you have a text or pdf copy of it still? For some reason, the journal isn't on medline and I can't find a copy of it online (though I could swear I did just that last week).

Thanks, Drgitlow 02:46, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
