"Marketing" is just another euphemism for "advertising"/"promotion"

edit

Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add soapboxing, promotional or advertising material to Wikipedia, as you did at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Shipman & Goodwin LLP, you may be blocked from editing. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:32, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been blocked indefinitely because this username implies that you intend to commit marketing in Wikipedia, in violation of our standards of impartiality; and indeed you have already done so (see our blocking and username policies for more information).

We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia, but users are not allowed to edit with inappropriate usernames, and trolling or other disruptive behavior is not tolerated. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Hi Orangemike, attempting to put up a page with historically content about the firm, not as advertising, sorry if user name sounded intentional I can change it. I was atttempting to mirror the pages for other firms historical content and since you have categories for this I thought it was accepted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwards_Wildman_Palmer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sullivan_%26_Cromwell

Smarmy and oleaginous blather like, "Shipman & Goodwin lawyers are recognized for their depth of knowledge and experience in a number of industry sectors including education, government, financial services, health care, nonprofit organizations, emerging and middle market companies, manufacturing, utilities, retail, software and information technology.... committed to diversity and inclusiveness within the firm, the legal profession and the community. The firm values the unique backgrounds and distinct contributions of all individuals; their deep commitment is reflected in efforts to promote understanding, advancement and empowerment" is not historical information, it is press kit bumfodder, and has no place in a reference work. It is not information, it is "promotion", a/k/a "marketing", a/k/a press-agentry, a/k/a spam. We have zero tolerance for spamming here. --Orange Mike | Talk 22:29, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry that you misunderstood the reason for your block. At Wikipedia, we all agree to avoid writing about ourselves and our own businesses or clients. So far, it isn't clear that you are interested in volunteering to help write the encyclopedia in that way, but if you are, you'll need to request a change to a purely personal username, and also leave a note here assuring us that in the future, you have a plan for editing in a purely neutral way, on topics in which you have no conflict of interest. Nothing you have said gives any indication at all that you intend to do any kind of editing other than using Wikipedia as a free advertising service, which it is not. The fact that you say that your initial editing was not intended as advertising makes it less likely that you will be unblocked, because if you can write such unadulterated advertising puffery and genuinely not see it as advertising, then you are so completely blind to the nature of what you are writing that you will have no way of avoiding making the same mistake again. Finally, the claim that you were not trying to advertise seems disingenuous. Someone who has no intention of advertising just happens to choose a username which includes the word "marketing"?? And then, without intending to, they write the sort of straight advertising copy that you wrote??? A remarkable coincidence. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:22, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

This was the plate marker of my first vehicle and I've used it elsewhere online in the past. I understand that the article needs to be rewritten. I will try to do it more in the concise factual manner you noted. Is there a way to have you review the article and not just ban it from the get-go?

The other concern discussed above was Conflict of interest. If the subject you intend to write about is one with which you have a professional relationship, it is a problem. Could you address that? UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 16:31, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

You're right the piece was a direct cut and paste (of our directory listings) and not a piece edited for the specific purpose of Wiki and I was beginning the process of editing it for wiki when I was banned (I saved before going to lunch). I'd like the opportunity to write a piece directly for the purpose of historical content (which I will do separately before putting it into the wiki editor). The reason I asked about an area for review is not because I can't tell the difference but because I didn't want to make it seem as if my goal was to try to post advertising. You may also note that yesterday (altho not under this user-name) I edited the portion for 'Interior' for the article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_BRZ , I have also edited pieces in the past for CRM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer_relationship_management and Jeep Wrangler (although not with this IP address). You have my greatest apologies for this misunderstanding and I would really like to earn your trust by creating an article that will enhance the Wikiproject law and expand the category of law firms founded in 1919. Your unblock request openly admits to introducing copyrighted text into Wikipedia (you cannot copy a piece of text from another website and save it here for later editing) and editing while logged out to evade a block. You have also given no indication that you intend to refrain from promotional editing on behalf of Shipman & Goodwin. If you continue to file inappropriate unblock requests (I had to reformat this one myself to include your reason correctly), you will lose the ability to edit this talkpage. "our directory listings"???? Who am us, anyway?
That is to say, what is the entity whose directory listings you reference, and what is your relationship to that entity? ---Orange Mike | Talk 21:20, 18 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Shipman & Goodwin provides tuition assistance for me as a student at Central CT State University. I wanted to put up a page for them as a school project using information found online and in the CCSU directories.

If you really want to get on here, I'd advise reading these policies: WP:CORP and WP:GNG (corporate and general notability); WP:RS (reliable independent sources); WP:SPAM (we have a guideline WP:DUCK which says 'if it looks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck, it IS a duck'); WP:NPOV (neutral point of view - how to be informative without going OTT); and WP:COI (writing about you and yours). There are hundreds more, but these are the main ones that cause the trouble for newcomers. People in marketing never seem to realise they are talking marketing-speak, people in churches and charities can't see why we are complaining about their enthusiasm, and so on. Also, please sign talk page posts with four ~ things. This puts your sig up and tells us who and when. (What you say should tell us what and why...) OK? You're not banned, by the way. That comes from a community discussion and can only be undone by another discussion. Blocking is done or undone by any admin (with certain exceptions), but there aren't vast differences in our reasonings. Peridon (talk) 13:04, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'll add WP:COPYVIO as cut and paste is seldom OK here. Most of the free stuff is free because it's ancient, and only stuff licensed the same way we are is safe to bring in. Peridon (talk) 13:07, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
