Katutura's Revolution

edit

An Otjiherero name meaning the place we do not want to settle, is Windhoek's famouse township. The township history lies back in 1i961 where black people where forced to stay there. It was then a very small place with few surbubs.

Today, Katutura is a very big place with alot of surbubs, Hakahana, Havana, Okuryangava, Ombile(I'm sorrry), Babylon, Goreangab, Greenwell Matongo, Okahandja Park, Oshitenda (metal), Golgot, Soweto, Grysblock, Nama location, Herero location, Vambu location, Illegal, Shandubala, Single Quarters, Nuamibus, Luxury hill, Olyeta, Wanaheda (Wambus,Namas, Herero,Damara), One Nation and Dolam are some of the surbubs one can find in Katutura.

In Katutura, There's a state hospital, malls(Katutura Shoprite where you will find variety of shops and hungry lion.) Pick'n pay complex and a herero mall where the otjiherero speaking people meet and have fun. There's also a swiming pool, parks (UN Plazza where most events take place), a dam where people make their parties and enjoy with their families and friends and the Sam Nujoma Stadium that was built in 2005.

To it's name, Katutura houses the majority of Windhoek's population. The houses are made out different types of building material. There are houses made out of ion sheet(zinc) refered to sharks and some houses made of bricks. The township is quiet clean, much like the rest of Windhoek, and it is a tourist attraction when one visits Namibia's capital city.

Katutura is the heart of the city where there's never a dull moment. Located within Windhoek is Katutura's legendary Eveline street which is an all in one. On both sides of the street are tarvens, hair salons, residential areas and car washes. where you find a car wash, it's given that a sheebe is lingers close by. The names of the shebeens therea re catchy, historic and attracting customers. Kwasa-Kwasa, Bad 74 boys, Tsunami.com, Barcklays, My sisters, Nicky's Durban, Masipiri(mirrors), maferes(hundreds),are just some of the names you find on the street.

Some of the people in Katutur have low income. They then came up with creative ideas of inceasing Their income. One of the good ideas of increasing income is the kapana from the single quarters of Katutura. Meat that is braaid and served with spice and chilli that makes it deliciouse. An amount of money is paid since a piece is N$2.00 and one eats as much as they can. There are butchers who sells fresh meat to the kapana sellers and the meat is never out of stock. Some of the locals have begun calling Katutura Matutura which means, "The place where we want to stay"
