Great edit at Hakea Petiolaris - but it needs either WP:CITE or WP:RS action as well... please keep that in mind when adding material, thanks satusuro 11:56, 13 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Synonyms

edit

Hello Laia lion,

Thanks for your edits - Wikipedia needs more people like you.

On the subject of synonymy - tricky, especially for Melaleuca species. The main problem here is that some species are called Melaleuca sp. by some authorities ("clumpers") and Callistemon sp. by others ("splitters"). Lyndley Craven was one of the former type and in 2013 published a monograph including all the callistemons as melaleucas. I started or expanded all the melaleuca pages in Wikipedia using Craven as the main source. But plenty of authorities do not agree with that (as I've explained on the respective pages - eg. under "Taxonomy and naming" on the Melaleuca glauca page). Some (most?) Australian herbaria use Callistemon glaucus, which Craven gave the name Melaleuca glaucus. You are quite right about "Callistemon speciosus" and "Melaleuca glauca" not being synonyms according to The Plant List. That's because TPL is a "splitter", however Kew Gardens is a "clumper" like Craven (and me).[1] (Hit the "synonyms" button in the Kew ref.)

I will work through all the List of Melaleuca species pages giving a reference for all the synonym lists - it will be Craven as suggested here as his is an authoritative monograph. I'd like to hear from you if you have thoughts about this. Gderrin (talk) 01:23, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
