Conflict of interest in Wikipedia; Terms of Use

Hi Laneyc - I'm replying to the note you left on my Talk page.

I work on conflict of interest (COI) issues in WP, along with my other editing. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and questions for you below.

Hello, LANEYC. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

• Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
• Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
• Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

Comments and questions

Wikipedia is a widely used reference work, and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. COI is managed in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review.

Would you please reply here and disclose your relationship with Allergan? After you reply, we can talk about next steps.

I work for the "new" Allergan's communications firm. What we have proposed is redirecting the Actavis page to Allergan, and taking the content from the original Actavis page, and adding it to Allergan. We will maintain the relevant content from the Allergan page, and I am happy to provide additional sources for some of the content that needs better souring. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LANEYC (talk • contribs) 14:20, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for replying, and starting the disclosure process. Please read above again - for any work you do here for consideration, you need to disclose "your employer, client, and affiliation". Would you please make the complete disclosure per the Terms of Use on your User page? Please do read the Statement from participating communications firms I linked to above, btw.

Once your disclosure is complete, the next thing to talk about is the "peer review" piece of this. Going forward, please do not edit the articles directly, but rather offer suggestions at the article's Talk page. You can do that easily - and provide notice to the community of your request - by using the "edit request" function as described in the conflict of interest guideline. I made that easy for you by adding a section to the beige box at the top of the Talk page - there is a link at "click here" in that section -- if you click that, the Wikipedia software will automatically format a section in which you can make your request. This allows the community to review your proposed changes for NPOV and sourcing before they are implemented, and thus manage the COI. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 14:50, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

thanks for updating your disclosure. By the "talk page" i meant Talk:Allergan and Talk:Actavis. It sounds like what you want is a merge of Actavis into Allergan. The page on merges I linked to there, tells you how to open a discussion about that on the relevant talk pages. Jytdog (talk) 16:06, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

I've updated and proposed the mergers on each Talk:Allergan and Talk:Actavis. Appreciate your help in walking through this. Any additional edits will be proposed via "edit request." I know that there were some issues with the sources for some of the products listed and we will work to provide better reference to be included in these proposals. Again, thank you for your help.
