makeup vs. societies edit

You left a message on my talk page regarding the above. Could you explain where you're coming from? Is it in reference to an edit I made? Lexicon (talk) 17:20, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I found it. Okay, here's why I made the change: "Carnival is traditionally held in areas with a large Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox societies" doesn't make sense. First, the grammar is wrong. To make it make grammatical sense it would need to be "Carnival is traditionally held in Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox societies", but that correction would lead to the second problem, which is that it's supposed to mean that Carnival is held in areas where there are lots of Catholics or, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox, but correcting the grammar leads to the false statement that there are Catholic or Eastern Orthodox societies, which there aren't. There are countries, regions, cities, etc., but not "societies". "Carnival is traditionally held in areas with a large Catholic and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox makeup" means "Carnival is traditionally held in places where Catholics and, to a lesser extent, Eastern Orthodox MAKE UP a large portion of the population", which is exactly what it's supposed to say. Disambiguation link notification for December 28 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited I Won't Back Down, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sam Smith. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Profanity (are gestures profane?) edit

Hello I'm bringing this to your talk page as, whilst I'm sure you are right about 'no need for refs in lede', no definitions of profanity include gestures. Profanity is either 'disrespect for the sacred', or, more recently 'bad language'. I put the cit tag in the hope that someone would either agree/disagree that gestures are NOT profane (unless of course you are 'giving the finger' in church etc.). Pincrete (talk) 20:56, 30 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello, apologies, I'm going about this in the wrong way. There are several unref'd and (in my opinion questionable) assertions on the Profanity page. What I should/will do is simply make my edits and see who bites. Thanks for previous replies.Pincrete (talk) 13:24, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Problem with your custom signature edit

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

More information about custom signatures is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. 19:04, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Custom signature fix needed edit

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. Changes to Wikipedia's software have made your current custom signature invalid.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error or obsolete HTML tags.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, you can fix your signature, or you can do nothing.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (Do not click the red "Restore all default settings" button, which will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Click the Learn more button next to the error to learn how to fix the error.
  3. Update your signature to fix the error.
  4. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

Solution 3: Do nothing:

  1. In accordance with a recent request for comment, all invalid signatures will be changed to the default, which looks like "Example (talk)", one month from now.
