The word Soundbringer was first coined by Paul Lansky, from Princeton University's music department. In an article regarding the future of music and music technology, he used the term of soundbringer to describe the blurring of the boundaries between performing/composing music and djing due to the important technological advances in this domain (mp3 compression, portable music players and computers, peer to peer..), thus foreseeing the current situation where music can be performed live by someone using a portable computer whilst it is created from a blend of original sounds and/or samples from other records. It represents a new era where the composer can become a live performer without the need for an orchestra. The DJ can recompose or "mashup" a piece on the fly and blend it with other sounds, therefore acting as a composer in some way. The technological advances allow someone to obtain, carry and share a lot of music cheaply and to bring a large quantity of music wherever they are, and therefore become a soundbringer.
