Marching Band Picture

I reduced the size of the in order to conform with the Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Images, which states in part, "Specifying the size of a thumb image is not recommended: without specifying a size the width will be what readers have specified in their user preferences, with a default of 180px". I understand that you contribution was intended to improve the Baltimore City College and your effort is appreciated, but I do think that in this situation I took the appropriate action. I also want to make it clear that my edit of the picture was in no way intended to be a personal affront. As you edit more on wikipedia, you will run into a lot of situations where your edits are changed by other editors. Entire sections, which I have written, have been rewritten by other editors. In those situations you need to realize that the other editor is simply trying to improve the encyclopedia in the same way you were. Golem88991 19:31, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

There are several issues here. First, the violation of the manual of style by other editors, does not make it appropriate in this situation. I can provide you with countless examples of violations. However, as several other editors and I are trying to make a push to get the article to FA status, we need to conform with the manual of style. Editors in commenting on FACs love to point out problems with the article conforming with the MoS. If you want you can check out the Talk:History of Baltimore City College page. One of the first comments made was about WP:MOS#Images.

Second, your argument that this falls under one of the blanket exceptions for the rule does not seem accurate to me. If you are arguing that the text of the marching band sign is easier to read with the bigger image, I would respond by saying that that is not the subject of the picture. The goal of the picture being in the article is the illustrate the marching band. It accomplishes this goal just as well at the user preference px as it does at 280px. Now if your picture illustrated a particular formation of the marching band, like the case of UCLA Band, I would agree that the large image size is appropriate. But I do not see how your image accomplishes its purpose any better at a larger size, and if anything it obstructs the layout of the article by condensing the text of the marching band section.
