Wiki editing

edit

This is my first wiki page, so sorry if I don't really know what I'm doing, plus I'm also trying to re-write the text that I was given as it's got the "wrong tone" for the wiki.

Any idea how I insert an image that I uploaded to commons? It's still on commons, but I can't link to it on the wiki page.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffal (talkcontribs) 14:36, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

belin

edit

Hi, well I perfectly see why you would think of my edits as possible vandalism of the page, but I was born as a Genoese and I can assure you that the first meaning for "belin" is "penis", and in a vulgar way. It's used as an exclamation, but it's not something you should use when talking to people, unless you are very familiar with them. So, in order to avoid misunderstandings, I either suggest to remove that expression, or to thoroughly explain its meaning. --Rtraverso86 (talk) 16:27, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I didn't see how Wow could = literally penis, it seemed out of place and, no offense, with your profile having no other contributions I decided to flag it as vandalism. While trying to Assume good faith, I felt that it was an extreame example that was just trying to be a bit too gratuitous. I do apologize for assuming it was intentional vandalism Kmg90 (talk) 16:55, 23 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Indeed wow does not mean penis, it's the vulgar for penis itself which is often meant as an exclamation with a meaning similar to "wow" or "what the fuck". Do not worry about that, it's just fate for me to notice such a thing to be changed with still so few contributions on my profile :) Could you please re-update the update accordingly, so that it does not seem like I'm vandalizing it again? I feel that the gratuitous act is to include "belin" in the examples... I would rather remove it, but do as you wish --Rtraverso86 (talk) 12:31, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Schmutz in German

edit

Hi, I saw your message to me about reverting my change on the "German words in English" page. What I had done was move "Schmutz" out of "terms rarely used in the English language" to another section (can't remember which off-hand) because schmutz is not rarely used. It's a very common Yiddish phrase, for which the meaning and spelling are identical to that of German, since Yiddish is a hybrid of German, Hebrew and Russian languages. If you disagree, so be it, but I think there's plenty of evidence that this word doesn't belong under "rarely used".

Case in point: http://www.dailywritingtips.com/the-yiddish-handbook-40-words-you-should-know/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.206.24.172 (talk) 23:09, 30 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pines Lake

edit

Why was the information regarding the Pines Lake Bighorns deleted? The team plays both in Passaic and Morris County NJ. In Morris County they play regularly at basketball facilities located behind the Pequannok Township Police Headquarters. Further, the team also plays frequently both at the basketball courts located in Pines Lake as well as other basketball facilities throughout Wayne Township which include the Wayne PAL and the courts located near the Wayne Police Headquarters. Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 160.93.161.243 (talk) 17:16, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

'Gay' in relation to dramatic or comedic works

edit

These were my thoughts (based on what you asked on IRC)

It is acceptable to use 'gay' in relation to dramatic works when:

  • When the requisite term forms part of the title of the work.
  • When the work (dramatic) has clear homosexual themes as a major theme or element (of the work under commentary or discussion), or if critical commentary on the work would be diminished without reference to such themes or elements.
  • When a performer or writer discussed in critical commentary is openly homosexual, and this formed a direct influence upon the work or contribution to the work concerned.
  • When critical commentary on a character, and related themes would be greatly diminished by the absence of homosexual themes or elements. ( A critical analysis of 'The Naked Civil Servant' would for example be greatly diminished if the homosexual elements, a key theme in the work were not mentioned.)

However, it is not generally acceptable to use 'gay' in relation to dramatic/comedic works when:

  • There is no obvious homosexual theme
  • The term 'gay' was "contemporanously" used either within the work or about a work in a non-homosexual context. In such instances,an alternative term is advised unless using direct source material, and even then an explanatory note should be provided.
  • The use would be a from of insult or derogatory comment.

Warning me

edit

You've just put a level 2 warning on my talk page because I added a duplicate warning on User_talk:64.132.94.34. Not even a level 1 - why? I usually start with level 1 myself unless the edit I'm complaining about was highly disruptive. If you'd taken the time to check you'd have realised that I was patrolling and my edits overlapped with another patroller - I should have checked, of course, but so should you. I'd like you to remove the warning (I prefer not to do that myself in case I give the wrong impression) andy (talk) 17:03, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Brenda Vaccaro

edit

Hi, I updated the Brenda Vaccaro page to include the 1985 mini-series Deceptions in which she co-starred. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.105.8.174 (talk) 15:49, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reviewing your edit again, I see that you did add to the Filmography, however some extra placeholder formatting text was also added that removed Filmography from being a section (<nowiki> text in front of the section header) and reverted as it is common for vandals to insert new data and placeholder text together to throw off vandal patrols. I have undone the revert and removed the formatting error.
I apologize for mistaking your edit as nonconstructive as I always try to assume good faith. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! To avoid making formatting errors in the future use the Show changes button prior to submitting any changes to confirm what is being added/changed to avoid being reverted. --Kmg90 (talk) 16:08, 5 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
