Extended-confirmed restriction edit

Hi Kiriuxa2002,

I have noticed that you have recently edited pages, including internal Wikipedia discussions, related to the Russo-Ukrainian War. Please note that, due to community consensus documented at WP:GS/RUSUKR, only extended-confirmed editors may make such edits.

When in doubt, please assume that a topic is covered by this restriction. We call this "broadly construed". If this still leaves you unsure about whether a topic is affected by the restriction, feel free to ask on my talk page.

This is not widely announced to newcomers, so I'm not blaming or condemning you for not knowing about this. I'm also not saying that your editing has been problematic in any other way. Your edit may well have been perfectly fine in all other regards, yet may have been removed for this reason.

Additionally, Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee has recognized "Eastern Europe or the Balkans" as a generally contentious topic area. Don't worry: The restriction to extended-confirmed editors is about the Russo-Ukrainian War, not the entirety of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The box below contains standardized advice for everyone.

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

This may be confusing, so I'll attempt to summarize it:

  • Only extended-confirmed editors may edit pages related to the Russo-Ukrainian War. Details and exceptions can be found at WP:GS/RUSUKR.
  • All edits about Eastern Europe and the Balkans, by all users, need to be done with extra care.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if there are any questions.

Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 09:33, 7 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have not edited pages related to the Russian - Ukrainian war . why was I given extended protection ? please remove the protection . I was given extended protection by mistake . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 09:46, 28 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Your unprotection request ([1]) seemed to imply that you are interested in editing in this area, and that you might even have done so in the past ("any more"?).
All I'm saying is that you may not do so at the moment, because you do not meet the requirements for editing about this topic yet. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 11:44, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I didn 't make any edits to this article at all . And I was given extended protection for all articles related to the Russian - Ukrainian war . And I 'm not interested in editing these articles . In short , I was given extended protection by mistake . I DIDN 'T EDIT THESE ARTICLES AND I WASN 'T GOING TO EDIT ANYTHING THERE ! Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 14:28, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
I do not know how else to explain it to you Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 14:31, 29 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi Kiriuxa2002, I hope you don't mind a word from me, but you don't appear to have understood what has happened. You have not been given "extended protection" - by mistake or otherwise. Protection is something that applies to pages not to users. If you have no interest in editing articles related to the Russian-Ukrainian war, then you have nothing to worry about and there's no need for you to ask for them to be unprotected. Changing the protection of pages won't change the way you see them at all - what we see is the same for all of us, whether aa page is protected or not. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 21:11, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    then another question . I have extended protection since October 7 , 2022 . Although I registered on wikipedia on October 4 , 2022 and made the first edit at the same time . I didn 't have extended protection until October 7 . In this regard , the question is when will the extended protection be removed ? If she ever comes off . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 07:16, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    You are still confusing two things here - but it is all very confusing for a newcomer, so I understand that.
    A page is "extended protected". A user needs to be "extended confirmed" to edit such a page. You will become "extended confirmed" when you have made 500 edits, and you have so far made about 30 edits.
    You did not become "extended protected" on October 7, because a user simply can not be "extended protected" - "protected" only applies to pages. It is possible that a page, or some pages you were reading, were extended protected on October 7 - but not you yourself.
    Wikipedia:Protection policy explains the different levels of protection that a page can have, and Wikipedia:User access levels explains the different levels of confirmed access that a user can have. As I say, it is confusing, but I hope this helps. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:42, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    Yes, I have several pages protected since October 7 last year. In particular , all articles related to the war in Ukraine . But until I made the first edit on wikipedia , everything was fine . And after I made the first edit after registration , I have extended protection on some articles . And some simply say "this article is protected". And on some articles it is simply written that this article is protected until such and such a date . And then the protection of the article is removed . But this is only on some articles. not at all. There was no such thing before the first edit . And what will it always be like now ? or will the protection be removed soon ? Sorry, I don't understand how Wikipedia works. Maybe my questions seem silly . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 09:43, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    No, your questions are not silly at all, and I understand the confusion. I don't think any of the article protections are because of you. Articles are protected from time to time because of disruption or conflict - sometimes it is for a set period of time, and sometimes it is indefinitely (which just means until a community, or administration, decision is made to reduce the protection). So when will protection be removed? We really can't answer that. I think all protections will be removed some time after the war ends, and some maybe sooner than that - we really just need to wait and see. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:15, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    I also think so after the war. All protections on all articles will be removed . Thank you. Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 12:50, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    the invasion phases have also stopped updating . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 12:03, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    The counteroffensive has already begun and the phases of the war have not been updated . please update the invasion phases . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 12:45, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    You need to make a request on the article talk page... but Wikipedia is not a news source (see WP:NOTNEWS), and does not try to keep up with breaking news. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 12:49, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    thanks for the help. already updated . Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 15:34, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    But I didn't write anything anywhere. Kiriuxa2002 (talk) 15:36, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
    I guess someone was already working on it :-) Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 16:40, 9 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
