Gnolls
editKesh: It has been two months, and I am STILL bothered by your September 16 deletion of the references to Dunsany and St. Clair under "Gnolls in Literature". I am respectfully requesting that you re-instate them, or give me leave to do so. Yes, there is some redundancy, but most of the material deleted was relevant but NOT redundant, specifically the NAME of the Dunsany story, the link to that story, and the entire entry on the St. Clair story. The St. Clair story is relevant because it was actually THAT story (per private conversation with Gary Gygax in February of 2006) that led to the inclusion of gnolls in D&D in the first place. - If you have a verifiable, citable source that this is the origin, sure. Otherwise, we have to leave it out. I'm afraid a private conversation cannot be used, per WP:V. He's bound to have mentioned it in a published book or magazine if that's the case, so if we can find such a source, then we can add it. -- Kesh 22:49, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
- My main point stands: The title and date of the Dunsany story BELONG somewhere in this article. Also, given the existing tone and content of the article, I believe some mention of the St. Clair article should also be included: Dunsany's gnoles are unquestionably part of the gnoll heritage, and St. Clair's gnoles are unquestionably related to Dunsany's gnoles. Your edit removes relevant and appropriate information in the name of correcting a trivial redundancy. (And no, you will NEVER find a published Gygax interview on the history of gnolls as a concept; who would have published such a thing?) Unclehyena (talk) 22:47, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- The Dunsany poem itself is already mentioned, as is the only relevant quote from the OD&D book. As for the Gygax inspiration, if it is not published, then it is not verifiable and cannot be added. I'm sorry. -- Kesh (talk) 23:23, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- Looking at the article, it might be worth expanding the Dunsany section a bit, and adding a small paragraph on St. Clair (though we would again need citations to claim inspiration from Dunsany). I'll see what I can whip up this weekend. -- Kesh (talk) 23:25, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you. Again, my reason for wanting the St. Clair story listed is its relation to Dunsany (which is obvious if you have read both stories; they both involve scary creatures called "gnoles" who collect giant emeralds); I only mentioned the relationship between Gygax and St.Clair as an aside, to you, by way of reinforcing the idea that that the store deserved mention; I KNOW that the only way THAT relationship will be wiki-worthy is if I actually interview Gygax on the topic myself (possible), AND find someone to publish it (higly improbable). As to what should be in the article, you might just take another look at what you deleted; I still don't see what purpose the deletion actually served. Unclehyena (talk) 15:14, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
