Genealogy edit

Yes. I am a Mormon. I do have quite a bit of experience doing genealogical research, but I don't know exactly where you would look for China/Phillipines records. Can you try the following steps and let me know how it goes?

  • Do a surname or full name search at Google for the more unique ancestral names in your family. You are likely to be most successful with the earliest back ancestors, because they are most likely to have distant cousins researching them. Also besides familysearch.org, you ought to search rootsweb and gencircles.
  • Look at http://www.cyndislist.com for ideas in China/Phillipines research, or the specific areas your ancestors lived. Cyndi's List is huge. But it has a search engine and many good thoughts and summaries.
  • Enter your genealogy in the free program PAF available for download at www.familysearch.org, or I could help you enter it directly on the web at my web site using phpGedView. http://www.hawsedc.com/phpGedView/ Or both.

I don't know what you have done so far, but I think an excellent way to start would be to load PAF on a laptop computer and visit all your aunts, uncles, and cousins, and grandparents, picking their brains for names, dates, and places. You would be typing while they would be talking. That worked great for me once when I had a laptop on loan. Hawstom 16:20, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Using the Scientific Method for the Real Truth edit

I identify very strongly with your User Page statement quoted below:

I believe in supernatural phenomena, as it is well documented. I believe it is perfectly rational and even scientific to believe in the existence of God (Supreme Being, Intelligent Designer, Creator, etc. as you may call Him). I feel that part of the purpose of life is to learn, develop talents, and accomplish noble goals. So let's continue in our educational endeavours to contribute to the betterment of humanity.

I am interested in representing better the scientific point of view in some of our articles about God and Heaven and the meaning of Life. I tried to do this at the Heaven article. I tried to point out that core knowledge of God and Heaven comes from key testimony and evidences, and that much of humanity's belief on the subject fails to follow the good evidence and instead favors speculation and tradition. In other words, I am decrying the fact that knowledge of God and Heaven has been hijacked by people who know nothing about it and don't seek, but rather speculate and preserve the speculations of others. I hope to see you in the future as I keep an eye out on this front. You may be interested in the statement of faith on my own page. Hawstom 20:57, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Freemasonry and Joseph Smith edit

I don't know all that much about Freemasonry. I do know that Joseph Smith was quite impressed with Freemasonry and reported that he thought there were many truths in its rites. Joseph Smith was for a time quite enthustiastic about Freemasonry, and ascended rapidly within the organization. I think Joseph Smith would have been very comfortable with the idea that the temple endowment resembled the ceremonies of Freemasonry. Tom 04:23, 8 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Re:

As a matter of fact, I am quite interested with the complex topic of Freemasonry. It is because it has a strong influence in history, government, religion and other institutions (including Mormonism). Anyway, I don't think I am comfortable with the strong link between the two institutions (Masonry and LDSC) In case you didn't know, the book Mormon America would provide valuable insights into this matter. Yeah. A lot of people are and were uncomfortable with the link. I just don't think Joseph Smith was. I wonder what was the view of his parents and brothers and sisters and the Whitmer family Tom 05:39, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, vandals are frustrating, but it's probably a better idea to find some other way to work out your annoyance. ;)
