Here's my latest message to the Liverpool Post&Echo, at the Syndication Department.

Will keep you informed Message reads: Attention Mr.Tony Hall

Dear Sir, Have just spoken to Colin Hunt, who assures me that you are the person to whom I should direct my request. I wrote to your website a couple of weeks ago, but have had no reply.

I am participating in a group project to write a Wikipedia article about Alan Durband, and would be pleased to include some photographs, but they can only be published if I have copyright releases.

The two items which we would like to show are a) A bearded Alan Durand gesturing towards the front of the Everyman Theatre b) Willy Russell and Pete Postlethwaite at the unveiling of a plaque in Durband's memory, standing in a doorway of the theatre.

These are two photos which are readily accessible on the Internet, but Wikipedia will not include them without documentation.

Colin Hunt thinks that this should not present any major problem, and has thus referred me to you.

Please let me know if you can be of assistance, Yours sincerely, Ken Ashcroft.

P.S. “Dusty” was not only my English teacher at The Institute, he was my first cousin!

License tagging for Image:2nd July 1946.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:2nd July 1946.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Images - Copyvio

edit

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia - it is much appreciated. However, please stop placing images on Wikipedia that have been taken from websites - this breaches copyright and puts the Project at risk.

I am removing:

  • Gesture.jpg
  • Plaque.jpg

Because both state that they have been taken from websites - these will go to the Copyvio project to be dealt with.

It is less clear the source of:

  • Willy and Pete 2.jpg

but this will be removed if it cannot be sourced from an acceptable source.

  • July 1946.jpg

states 'Family History Photo'. Did you take this photo yourself, please?

I am happy to help you through this so please ask me any questions you may have.

Sources

edit

I notice that you have removed the ((Sources)) tage. I explained that the article must meet WP:CITE. If the tag does not remain then much of the content may have to be removed since there are many, possibly contentious, statements. Please work with me on this, and I will give you any necessary guidance, but unilaterally removing tags does not help.

Edit summary

edit

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. BlueValour 19:52, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

3RR warning

edit

As explained above, please stop removing the sources tag. Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert a single page more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. BlueValour 19:53, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

An image that you uploaded, Image:Gesture.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

I have obtained a replacement photo taken by a friend yesterday. His name is Geoff Southern and he lives in Liverpool. The obvious difference in the two images is that the first one I used showed the plaque on the outside of the theatre. It hs now been installed in the foyer !

Alan Durband

edit

You inadvertantly blanked the whole of my talk page so it will be easier if we correspond, here. You wrote:

Sir, I have no idea who you are, but understand your caution re. possible photo cribbing for the Durband Wikipedia article.

If you want to know who I am, then a partial story is that a) I am Alan Durband's first cousin b) I was in his class at the Institute in 1956 c) I became a chemistry teacher and professional photographer , and have published a series of textbooks on those subjects in Canada.

There's a world of diffenerence between being a writer and the role of an editor, and I have some understanding of your trepidation.

There exist a couple of websites completely devoted to Institute memories, so anything you do not publish can be displayed there. I still am in contact with Mrs.Durband, and have a box of famioy photos which need no corroboration.

As far as my simple needs are concerned the Wikipedia "professionalism" is far too cumbersome, and rather than go through a long series of menus and sub-menus, it would be simpler for me to recieve a direct e-mail, if that should be necessary, from you at ashcan@oberon.ark.com 'Yours sincerely,. Ken Ashcroft, A.R.P.S.

First of all, please add messages to a talk page at the bottom under a new heading. Also please do not blank what was there before. Further, please put four tithes ~~~~ at the end of messages - this will automagically add your name and the time.

I appreciate that editing Wikipedia mght appear daunting but it is straightforward once you see how its done. The first step is to work with other editors and assume good faith. So, for example, if you do not agree with the ((sources)) tag do not remove it but ask on the talk page (discussion tag) why it is there and discuss the way forward. A good example of cooperative working was the quote that I objected to. Your fellow editor provided a source, I put it in an acceptable format and everyone is happy.

The images are a problem. The 1946 one, from a family photo is fine as are other family photos provided you can assure that you hold the copyright. However, taking photos from a website is not allowed because it leaves the Project open to legal action. I am processing two - these will go unless you can show that you have permission from the copyright holder. It would be helpful to know where the 'Willy and Pete' came from since the same considerations apply.

Moving onto the text, key facts must be sourced and cited - see WP:CITE for guidance. This is not as daunting as it may appear. Also, what is not permitted is to copy slabs of text from a website since that also violates copyright. However, giving the links to relevant websites is just fine.

As to who I am, I am a retired professional person living in Lancashire, a graduate of Durham University and a Fellow or Member of several professional bodies.

I hope this moves things forward and I should be happy to help you as we move along. BlueValour 20:57, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have now sourced 'Willy and Pete to here. BlueValour 21:22, 28 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
